Welcome, and I would say you might be able to run a small space hulk game if you use the knights as marines. Otherwise still plenty to do reading up / etc even if you don't have many minis just yet

That's called proxying. Using something as something else. The models really just serve as markers, you can play a game without the actual model if you really wanted.

But as far as playing a game of 40k, that's not enough. If you want to start I recommend finding your local gaming group to help you out. then buy whatever codex for the army you are interested in, then start with a 500 point list and expand from there.

Unfortunately tyranids are what we call a horde army, you need dozens of the blighters to make a small army.
But there's no reason you couldn't run some combat examples with what you have, if you go to your local store.
Space marines are easier as you need far less of them.

Welcome to the forum. That's not really enough to play but you can practice painting with that.

Welcome to Dakka!

It sounds like you're new to the hobby. To play, you're going to need a copy of the rules. A lot of folks start off getting a copy of the rulebook in a box set, like Dark Vengeance. That set includes two starter armies, unit descriptions, and the rulebook. If you have any friends that also play, you could borrow their rulebook and read through it to get a feel for the game. You will also need a copy of your army's codex (e.g., Tyranids, Chaos Space Marines, etc.).

There are lots of great deals to be had on eBay, and here in the Dakka swap shop if you are looking to build your army.

Hope this helps!
