When I first started my warband, I ran something like:
Captain: Sword, Mace,
WH: Sword, Mace
WH: Sword, Mace
WH: Sword, Mace
WP: Sword, Mace
Flagellent x 3 w/ Flail
Dogsx3
Elf Ranger
Dogs are excellent chaff for when you need to sacrifice some dudes and run. You can use later funds to buy Crossbows for your WHs, and Great Weapons for your Warrior Priest/Captain, depending on how your traits roll. But, since Melee is much more effective for getting kills, thus experience for your heroes, I chose to start with that.
You can ditch the dogs when you have the money to replace them with Zealots, but losing a Zealot is a bit more costly on the pocket book and experience wise when they die. I preferred to keep dogs, but I played pretty aggressively with my Witch Hunters.
Flagellants start off with the Human Max of S, T and LD, so are pretty great for the early campaign, and if one turns into a hero off the bat he'll quickly evolve into a monster of a hero.
Later you can get an Ogre to fill out the ranks a bit, and since dogs are cheap, you can boost them up to five fairly quickly. Or add more Flagellents instead, and run two dogs (or zealots).
In the end, you are going to be making a bit less money than other Warbands since you need to supplement your numbers with Hired Mercenaries, but man, do Flagellents pound the stuffing out of everyone elses normal troops.
