What (in your opinion) is the space marine chapter with the most character?

For clarification Im not talking about which chapter has the most characters, or which is the strongest. But which one has a theme that you love and can really feel when you play their style/ paint them.

I realize this is entirely subjective, but Im curious.

For me it would probably be the Crimson Fists

Space Wolves by a mile. They have the most fundamentally different units that alter their gameplay from the other marine chapters.

Even my own army which I'd feel come in second on the uniqueness factor, Dark Angels, don't have units that fundamentally feel different from what other marine armies do. Black Knights are just veteran bikers with plasma guns. All Deathwing are just even-more overpriced Terminators. Deathwing Knights might as well be Assault Terminators. So on, so forth.

Dark Angels. A lot of unique units, great design, cool characters and story.

Dark Angels for me as well! Such a great backstory, and the organization (Greenwing, Deathwing, Ravenwing) is really cool!

Imho Smurfs.

They have the most characters literally

as well quite a lot of bits and kits to doll them up real nice.

their rules are not bad ether.

otherwise Blood angels also have a TON bling and characters too.

but Crimson fists are nice as well though not as much unique bits or style asides from the red fist thing

Blood Angels, cuz my opinion.

But really they stand out the most to me. Could talk about about their lore, rules, unique things, but we already all know it. So there isn't much else to say.

Grey Knights are definitely the most different on the tabletop. I really enjoy the Dark Angels fluff though. There's that one story in the 6th ed codex where an inquisitor captures a Fallen so they blow up his ship. I also like how the various successor chapters work closely with Dark Angels to smite heretics

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

To be completely keeping with the OP I would say Black Templar.

"Taking the battle to the enemy some 10k years" since they are completely fleet based.
An untold scary number of these guys who for some reason feel no need to keep their numbers under 1000.
Been guided by the hand of the Emperor since their inception with the "Emperor's champion".
Hands-on training for the new recruits: none of this hiding and sniper use stuff (oh, sorry, that changed with the latest codex).
Squads that are still bigger than 10.
Love direct challenges and when failing a moral check, get ANGRY and charge at the enemy.
What is black and white and red all over? BT after (the usual) close quarters engagement.
We chain ourselves to our weapons because, you know, we hate losing them in battle when we want to use our bare hands.
We are the "black sheep" of the Imperial Fists... they "hold the fort" as we go out and smite the enemy.
Their chaplain "Merek Grimaldus" had an entire temple collapse on top of him and survived it.
Helbrecht commanded the space fleet for the third war for Armageddon and kicked Warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka's butt.

"The Black Templar Chapter is the only Space Marine Chapter in existence known to still follow the Emperor's original vision of a Great Crusade to protect and reunite all the scattered worlds of Mankind across the galaxy."

The Land Raider Crusader variant of the standard Land Raider was developed by the Black Templars.

Chapter icons are on BOTH shoulders.

Last but not least, our weapon was: "Holy Orb of Antioch", yes, THE "Monty Python's Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch" so they are well prepared against killer bunnies.

I actually have to say Crimson Fists. Something about them just screams for individualized Sternguard and ornate Veterans leading every squad like my own Ultramarines or any other chapter just can't match.

The White Scars for me. I love their attitude, beliefs, and the way they wage war. I love the way they don't care what the rest of the imperium think about them and they refuse to change their ways to please anyone.

ā€œBecause we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Crimson Fists and Imperial Fists. In that order.

Rowboat Girlyman: "I wrote a book!"
Rogal Dorn: "BOOK? NO TIME! KILL TRAITORS!"

Ravenguard is pretty high up there, too, especially Cpt. Shryke's battle company. Always conducting attacks on beseiged imperial planets all but abandoned by the rest of the imperial forces? Amazing.

No, it is said often that their skin appears very dry from up close.

I'd say either Space Wolves or Dark Angels, but in a bad way.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)

Blood Angels have a wide assortment of visually distinct and characterful motifs across their range that all tie together into a cohesive and striking theme.

For instance. In their 40k format you range from this:

To This:

It shows the duality in humanity, the ability to have beauty, grace, and be heroic, and yet still have darkness, even madness that must be kept in check and at bay.

That's my choice on this. Blood Angels have a lot of character and depth that other chapters don't in my opinion.

Take it easy.

I started playing 40K with Xenos and Chaos. I really didn't like anything about any Space Marine chapter but decided that I should have at least one Imperium army in my collection. To me, the most non-Space Marine chapter is the Space Wolves. Their look is extremely flavorful, they have beast and cavalry units the others just don't have to really give it a throwback feel, and they regard individuality above all else. Even the chapter as a whole is individualistic compared to the other chapters. When the demand came down from the Emperor for all chapters to splinter off the Space Wolves refused and were allowed to dissent.

To me, all other chapters look the alike when painted the same color scheme. Hard to do that with Space Wolves models with all the flair they adorn. That alone sets them apart.
