Just wanted to make a post about the new cards for maelstrom matches.
Just played an awesome horus heresy event yesterday, 3000 points per player 2v2.
My ally and I opted to try out the new cards since I had forgot my normal tactical deck at home
It made for an incredibly aggressive and awesome game.
The way you're to secure and hold objectives, storm them, kill X things, etc really made you make some large scale decisions to maximize points.
I'm curious and excited to try them out in a smaller scale game to see how the experience changes, but id say without any doubt that these cards, when used in large scaled matches are really awesome.
The ONLY drawback to them, and it may not be so bad, is the cards that say to storm objective X can be a dud if you already have it or no if enemy is on it. we were not quite sure how to rule it, so we just held the card and discarded it at the end of the turn.
While I'm at it here's some pics from the event for those curious of the scale
We played so aggressively, that in order to storm the objectives in their deployment zone successfully, we had them completely wiped out on turn 3. the total match time was ~3.5-4 hours.
Anyone else try these out and have experiences to share?

I have been wondering what they are like. Thanks for the heads up, I have the space marine and Raven guard decks for the normal tactical objectives and was considering whether to get these or the basic deck for my nids.
Maybe both now... Automatically Appended Next Post: That battle looked awesome by the way.

Thanks! was honestly one of the most exciting game id played ever. Hoping to do a full display later in the 30k section or battle reports
The rest can be viewed here in the meantime

Back on topic though:
I think the cards are great for large scale games for sure, but I think at a smaller scale, less mobile armies could struggle to achieve them.
In our game we had a ton of troops to throw at objectives, while keeping some back to take anything behind the frontlines, but I guess on the other hand, in a smaller game your opponent would have les models defending objectives likewise.
It will definitely need some more play testing too fully feel out and id certainly like to get a better idea of what to do with the storming objective cards and a few others.

Wanted to check back in on this thread and leave an update.
Just played these cards in what was probably the worst setup possible and still had great success with them.
I played my 30k night lords vs. a fairly tough Tau list, 1850 points each player.
30k, for those unaware, only allows troops to score, so my only scoring units were two 10 man terror squads and a 5 man terror squad.
Early game was a struggle due to some bad luck and poor reserve rolls, by turn 3 I was down 2 to 6. Then after a mix of reserves coming in and drawing some very good cards, I managed to pull a turn 5 win of 12-7.
Overall I think in smaller games, these cards still function great, though they can giveth and they can taketh when it comes to lucky card draws.
For a 40k army, they would be even better then when used with a 30k force.
Personally I very much enjoy how aggressive they encourage you to play, and intend to try and have these be my go to objective cards when playing maelstrom of battle.

Well not all armies are created equal. All the "shoot enemy off objective" cards are nigh on impossible for orks.

I hadn't looked at all of the cards in too great of detail, but my experience so far shows more point awarded for killing in assault.
For example the one I distinctly remember was 1 point for killing a fast attack enemy, but 2 points if it is done in assault phase.
A lot of the other are just about having the objectives at the conclusion of the phase.
Having said all that, I do get where you're coming from for some armies struggling with these

Objectives are more challenging but more rewarding.
Instead of "Claim objective 2" it may have you defend objective 2 for 2 turns, or secure 2 even numbered objectives for D3 victory points

Interesting. I have been playing with the Harlequin specific deck, but I have been thinking about picking up these cards and just switching out the first six for the harlis.
Is that an actual option? Thought I heard that somewhere on release...

Sounds like a fun idea, but I'm not sure it will work in practice, the cards are different sizes so shuffling and drawing might become troublesome.

The biggest problem with them is GW made the dirt-stupid decision to make them a different size from the previous objective cards.
So you can't swap them out or use any of the factional ones.
Durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Well, that stinks a significant bit. Oh well, I can still put them in a cities of death deck. Those seem to be a mid point between the originals and the tactical supremacy cards...
