Came here to dreride the silliness and immaturity of the younger generation and stereotypical troglodyte internet peoples; one look at the ship in question and I'm quite happy that it has been named correctly.

Carry on.

Don't ever leave voting to the internet, or you will get a HILARIOUS troll response.

Such as the winning entry for Mountain Dew's new flavor: 'Hitler did Nothing Wrong'
Second place: 'Fapple'.

Could be worse. Could be that Mountain Dew flavour competition where the winner was "Hitler did nothing wrong", followed up quickly by variations of the theme "Granny Spray".

Boaty McBoatface is tame by comparison.

There are social networking companies charging large amounts of money for their consulting work, who apparently have no idea how the internet treats company polls.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Nuff said.

Though Boaty Mc'Boatface is an apt name.

I think the actual scientists involved in working on Boaty McBoatface will be happy with the choice,

(just look at the names we give things when given free reign like naming genes http://www.curioustaxonomy.net/gene/fly.html)

Indeed they are;

it seems the publicity is worth it, though I suspect HMS Boaty will be re-christened quite quickly - I suggest HMS Cold Icey Death. Round 2 anyone?

This is disgraceful really.

Other potential names to grace the ship’s hull are RRS Usain Boat, RRS Ice Ice Baby, RRS Boatimus Prime and RRS Big Metal Floaty Thingy-thing.

I also found it funny when the author was talking about "sensible names" he didn't realize that Pillar of Autumn was the name of a ship from Halo and that's probably why its a runner up. Unless I'm just really blind and forgetting something I can't think of an actual event or ship that name comes from. That said, it is a good name for a ship at least.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Under the terms and Conditions the name will be chosen by th Chairman of the NERC.

So it means the top running sensible name.

Henry Worsley is possible, but David Attenborough is more likely. However in the UK is is against form to make official statues of name national assets like naval vessels after a living person except the reigning monarch.
This counts out David Attenborough as a ship name, but as society is changing this traditional form might lapse.

It will be fun of the Chairman likes Pillar of Autumn and doesn't google what that means.

Honestly, this is actually a good thing.

The PR marketing that could be launched based on this ship aimed at young kids, gold!
Books.
Special guest appearances on educational programming, like Sesame Street.
Toys.

Then, in response, the owners get funding because the more it works the more it has to share with kids.
While this is hilarious, don't overlook the boon this provides.

I can't tell which is more dazzling - the fact they trusted the internet of all things for a name, or that the lead name has no sexual innuendo.

My first thought was "call it 'RSS Feed'"
second was 'RSS Borrowed Time
But we missed out badly on having 'RSS Slartibartfast'

That would have made my decade.

Think the second carrier is HMS prince of Edinburgh. So royal consorts count.

The names of the new carriers are Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales.

Whilst at the moment we have a Queen Elizabeth, she is II. The name was also used during first world war for a class of battleships and refers to Good Queen Bess.

The UK also had princes of Wales since Edward I's time (I mean, ignoring that fact that before then there were independent Welsh princes of Wales.) We've had ships named HMS Princes of Wales since the 18th century.

Boring... What is the fun in using the same old names over and over again? I would much prefer the dreadful HMS Fluffykins or something like that. The RN has a severe case of lack of imagination (and humour). Maybe the RN should also consider an internet poll for naming its ships?

The fun is tradition. Some RN ship names go back hundreds of years. Others are derived from captured enemy ships, like Temeraire.

When the navy ran out of names it would often name a whole class after one letter, like A class destroyers -- Acasta, Achates, Active, Antelope, or an idea, like Tribal class destroyers which included Gurhka, Bedouin and Ashanti.

It's a research vessel that will be exploring Antarctica when it is completed.

Antarctica is a cold place.

RRS John Snow is an obvious choice.

Since space is also a cold place, and vengeance is a dish best served cold:
