I remember that the assassins used to be unique characters so only one of each could be taken in an army, however I have recently been challenged to a game in which my opponent is taking nothing but vindicares. I checked the dataslate and is just says: infantry(character), not unique.
Is this correct or am I incapable of reading?

They are no longer unique, but they are also no longer as great. Double check his weapon usage. The various ammo types changed with the latest iteration of their rules. For example, the turbo-penetrator round is no longer anywhere near as good at punching through tanks.
Also, they're horrifically ineffective against large numbers of models. In a straight match between 1850 points of Vindicares and 1850 points of Grots, I'd bet on the Grots every time. At best, in shooting, your Vindicare is killing a single 3 point model every turn.

Which makes sense for a sniper assassin dude. Grots are like the hard counter to that.

Although 1850 points of Callidua vs 1850 points of Grots might be a different story, cuz, ya know, Flame templates. The moral of the story is don't field 1850 pts of the same unit (unless that unit is WraithKnights)

With proper spacing (i.e. a full 2 inches between each model), a Flame Template can't actually kill that many Grots. Each shot kills maybe 4 Grots? That's 12 points of models. Each Callidus needs FAR more than 6 turns to earn its points back in the Shooting phase. The Grots will, of course, be in units of 20 (19 Grots and 1 Runtherd) with each 6 units having a Big Mek to lead them. That's 456 Grots, 24 Runtherds and 6 Big Meks w/Kustom Force Fields in 1828 points. You need a LOT of Flame Templates to clear out that sort of nonsense. You'd need to deal with them via close combat. Wiping a full unit is only taking out 62 points. Again, you'll need several turns of successful combat to wipe out enough units to make your points back. Realistically, it's like fighting zombies in a movie. They keep coming in waves. Very short, kind of green zombies.

Well technically, the turbo penetration round causes d3 wounds against non vehicle units. But yeah the grots wouldn't have much bother against a bunch of vindicares.

<edit> Or a GROUP of assassins sent to kill a GROUP of grots.
Or the extreme idiocy of the assassin allowing hundreds of grots to attack him if they are NOT their target.
Sometimes, even the fluff makes sense.

To be fair, the vindicare is still good at what he should be good at. Yeah, one-shotting land raiders was amazing but he should never have been able to do that.
He excels at removing single models from units. Got an annoyin plasma cannon/missle launcher/whatever hiding in a tac squad? 2+ to hit, 2+ to wound, no more problem!

Indeed. Dude blew up my Apothecary out of my Ravenwing Command Squad once and that seriously hurt the survivability of the whole unit. Failed the look out sir! and that was it.
