I used to play 40K back in 5th/6th editions, RL stepped in and my stuff has sat since. My kids are old enough to start playing and thinking about teaching them. I have the 5th and 6th rule books, Black Reach and Dark Vengeance boxes, sizable amount of SM and a few from other armies and several codexs from that time frame. Games will likey be 500-1000pts.
Would there be any major reason to buy the new rulebook?
I like a lot of the new models, how well do the new codexs mesh with the older rules?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Some aspects of the psychic phase will be broken, but that's about the only thing that won't work as intended for the new stuff in an old ruleset. Plenty of people play oldhammer.
Just don't try and play a new codex against an old one.

If you are just playing amongst yourselves and arent trying to go out and get a pickup game then yeah it would be fine to play with an older edition of rules.
But if you (or your kids) start getting in to it and want to pick up a newer codex or a new supplement, some of the rules within may not mesh well with the old ruleset.

If you do decide to update to the 7th edition rulebook, check out eBay or equivalents for the smaller A5 softback versions of the rulebook - they contain all the rules, are easier to carry around and are included in starter sets so there's often many of them for a reasonable price.
But, as stated above, there's no real need to update if you don't want to, especially if you have the relevant (era) codexes.

You can get the Dark Vengeance rulebook on ebay for quite cheap if you want to learn 7th. There are online tools as well but I wouldnt bring that to your FLGS unless you want the employees bothering you about it.

Many thanks for the advice. Miniatures are just what we played when we weren't playing MagicTG(that's the big game around here) and 4-5 of us tried to get together once a month. Never were any competitions close enough to bother with. I thought the Dark Vengeance 'digest sized' rule book was 6th edition? (has the same cover, never read though it). I know i will have to to update eventually, some of the new stuff is too tempting, ( Imperial Knights, Centurions and KDK (my little bits of Chaos are all Khorne). I have little bits of most armies that were current then,(except Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle, no interest in either), see something cool, pick it up and then take forever to get it painted...lol. Thanks again for the info.

GW re-released Dark Vengeance with a new 7th edition mini rulebook, I believe. If you're buying on ebay, just try to make sure you're getting the correct edition.
