Subject: How to deal with Tau as wolves?

Stealthy Space Wolves Scout
|
My friend players trolls every army I've ever collected. I've amassed a 6k wolf army based off the space marine battle novels and various ever mother novels I've read, they're the first army I've really connected with.
My tau friend had a game the other day against his brother and his brothers friend. They play Eldar and Necrons. The game was 750 points and he destroyed them both. He was saying they if he can beat both of those, then my wolves stand no chance. How can I defend myself!? He has an answer for everything. I drop pod in, using ragnars company and he intercepts me. His riptide wing can put 6 pie plates that will just eat my marines. His fire warriors put out so many shots, my Thunderwolves can't cope. His stealth suit cadre rips apart any armour I want to take.
I just have a feeling he's going to put me off the only army I've had a genuine connection with for a long time. I own almost everything aside from armour (40 grey hunters, 30 blood claws, 15 TWC, 7 pods, long fangs, LRC and a lot more)
Can you guys help me? He takes 3 riptides at larger point games :(

ask him to field no Riptide Wing.. and also ask him to not use Stimulant injectors on his riptides.
Also concentrate on his Markerlights. And try to make several multible assaults in a turn. Thus you reduce their Overwatch fire

lots and lots and LOTS of blocking line of sight terrain. Strategically move those TWC from blacking terrain to blocking terrain and then charge his face in. If he shoots the crap out of you don't let him see you. If you have to make you're own terrain so you aren't playing on planet bowling ball then so be it.

I agree with drop pods as well. Half of your drop pods come in turn 1 automatically. He cant kill em all and your gunna get some damage in. Also I was pretty sure that if you intercept fire you cant shoot those weapons on the next turn am I right?

You are right Xerics. Which means those super weapons don't get the benefit of Markerlights.
Drop pods also mean you don't have to bunch up like normal deep striking and you can use the pod as cover from the scariest guns.

Yeah that is correct - tau can't handle the full drop pod all in. At the very least it ensures that your thunderwolves get there and once thunderwolves are in on the tau - it's over. Tau will still win some of thee games because of how obscene their firepower is though.

Ultramarine Librarian with Freaky Familiar
|
Buy angels of death. Get Space Marine allies and run the librarian formation. Put the librarians on bikes, stick them in a squad of Stormshield equipped TWC and apply invisbility and spess mahreen fortune. Congratulations, you have a 2+/3++ unit that can be only snap shotted at and rerolls saves. I believe you can make it a lot worse.
Alternatively, don't play him.

Yes but remember he can jump away in the shooting phase still which may give you issues in catching him.

Just wait till those new powers are out, then ally with GK for 2++ rerollable invuln save lol.
But elsewise, try and use LoS blocking terrain as much as possible, and always remember their jetpack jumping rule.

Funny enough, if he hasnt brought a Stormsurge to the fight, you might actually do well with a Land Raider Crusader full of blood claws. Tau lost most of their S10 firepower, and if he loaded up with missile sides and a mass load of S5 - S7 firepower your raider could very easily cross the field intact and unload a ton of melee hurt into those fire warrior lines.
In this day and age, av14 can hit people with a bit of a surprise.

Droppods and TWC with Invis will do tau in. Drop down and shoot/flame the markerlights then your invis TWC star has free reign over our entire army. Use multi charges to your advantage so you don't kill whatever you charge and leave yourself open to more shooting

Wolves vs Tau I think is going to depend what kind of Tau list your fighting. Against Riptide spam you will be well off with Thunder Wolves as their blasts will only hit a few models and you can tank that with 3++ invuln saves. Proper spacing and utilizing LoS blocking terrain as well as distraction units like plasma drop pod squads are good. Honestly Broadsides I think are going to be scarier for TWC as their 3++ invuln isn't a huge concern from mass Str 7 shooting that wouldn't even bypass your standard armor. Now against something like Fire Warrior spam TWC get rolled really hard as the mass volume of S5 shooting as well as lack of meaty targets to charge makes it very difficult for TWC to charge into something to deal decent damage and not end up caught out in the open for mass rapid fire + 1 pulse rifles. Against this Drop Pods do better as there isn't as much interceptor fire and if you can neutralize any ethereals and markerlights then its makes the rest of the army that much less combat effective.
A very important thing to know when going against Tau (especially Fire Warriors) is to almost always multi charge. Fire Warriors have defensive grenades which neutralize your bonus attacks while supporting fire brings everybody nearby into the overwatch phase so might as well try to grab multiple units into CC. Tau hits like a wet noodle in CC and you generally want to stay locked in combat the turn you charge which becomes way easier when there are multiple units in the combat which means you just need them to 1 to pass leadership to keep your guys safe in melee. Tau leadership isn't too great (unless Ethereal which should be priority #2 behind markerlights) so falling back Tau aren't as likely to get back into the fight before your on top of them for more CC.
Never try to outshoot Tau especially as Space Wolves. Shooting their markerlights is solid as well as chipping away at units to soften them up but in general you don't have the fire power to take out their big threats from range. Key targets to shoot from range are markerlights, broadsides, and units with leaders (Fireblade, Ethereal, etc). Space Wolves really lack the dakka to take down Riptides in shooting (between the 2+/3++ they should be using every turn as well as 5+ FNP which should be an auto include).
