I really want to include on of these squads into my army, and I'm considering going 10 meltas. Is that overkill? What loadouts do you guys like for this unit and does it suck or have they worked well for you?

I have a plasma gun squad and a flame squad. If I were doing a melta squad I would probably go pure melta, or maybe a power fist, or Combi-flamer for the Sarge. Depends on what you want to do. Anything in range is most likely going kaboom, so melta bombs are probably a waste. I always upgrade to AA for modelling opportunities.

I think melta guns are more expensive in HH than in 40k, they are equivalent to plasma guns anyways, and my plasma squad is costly.

Melta squads are good in drop pods. What legion do you play?

I looove my 10 man Volkite Caliver squad for my Fists.. they love bbqing the enemy

I'm also quite fond of Plasma for support squads.

As far as full load out though, i always go full weapons and I rarely stick Melta Bombs on them, but I always take Artificer Armor and find some way to cram an Augery Scanner into the squad.

Yeah, I want to stick ten of these guys into a pod to support my 20 man assault squad. I'm playing blood angels and I already have a lot of anti infantry, so that's why I was thinking meltas. Also, you have to go pure whatever per the squad, no mixing and matching :/

it depends on what you want them to do, obviously

with flamers they would make threatening charge eaters, or charge blockers since no one wants to get 10 flamers of overwatch. Volkite is fun, plasma is a bit better then melta in my mind (since if you can generally afford (points wise) a 10-melta squad, the opponents big tanks will get their melta immunity). the only weapon I would actively avoid for them is the rotor cannon unless it gets some major rules changes. it's just so bad, arguably the only terrible wargear in 30k.

I use 5 man support squads with plasma to harass terminators - does okay, but tend to get killed in the next opponent turn.

Wait, shoot, I'm just reading the rules more closely here, guess you can't even stick these guys in drop pods without using that one rite of war where you pod your entire army. Whoopsth!

A friend of mine, plays salamanders, runs a 10 man squad of flamers. I'm always telling him its just to many models. I feel a 10 man melta would be the same thing. Short of a Spartan, there really isn't anything that a 5 man squad shouldn't be able to deal with.

When I run a support squad, I tend to do 5 men in a rhino with plasma guns. Their a great answer to everything short of AV13. I play against a lot of fast armies, Emps Children, mech Salamanders, Drop Pod Sons of Horus, so I'll usually have the rhino just hide in the backfield, hope he forgets about them, then have a turn 3-4 surprise pop out and ruin his day.

I agree, 5 man groups in Rhinos is the way to go. I usually run Volkite or Flamers but it really depends on what you're using them for and what Legion you're playing.

<Dynasty> ~10500pts
War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts
Thrice-Damned Plague Corps ~3250pts
Admech (TBN) ~3500pts +30k Bots and Ulator

You can shove them into a Dreadclaw, but Dreadclaws don't have the deep strike protection that regular drop pods or the bigger Kharybdis get.

Maaan, I wish I owned a dreadclaw. Still sort of limited by the models I actually have over here, so I was trying to make something work with a normal drop pod

This actually isn't a bad idea, and as a Blood Angels player I can slap an assault cannon on my rhino for 15 pts for some solid dakka.

Thanks guys!

They are so costly I am just not seeing the point aside from armies who have special rules that lend themselves to these units (Salamanders for the flamer squads mainly).

5-6 man squads of normal marines just seem like they would be dusted before they even get a chance to look at an enemy unit funny.

Support squads are fantastic but i would usually stay with 5 men as a backfield defence hidiung out of sight till the time comes to wreck something thats gotten near your deployment zone or a rhino charge, plasma is my favoutire but for the price flamers are nothing to sniff at.
I would never ever use Melta, range and an overabundance of armoured ceramite make it basically useless. Unless of course your local meta is in its none armoured ceramite time that comes around everyt so often when people have stopped feilding melta lol.

I actually run a 10-man support squad, but I field them with Volkite Calivers. They're a solid backfield unit with that 30" range, and not as expensive as the melta or plasma versions.

Depends on the RoW I am using with my Night Lords. I have two Terror squads with volkite but if I run orbital assault then I run 4 support squads squads in drop pods, one being a ten man volkite squad, one being a 6 or 7 man flamer squad which rarely does not get double its points back, a 5 or six man plasma squad typically with an apothecary and a suicide five or six man melta squad for taking out knights and superheavies.

If I run my Terror Assault list then I do not use them at all and instead have vet squads geared and skilled up to do something similar.

I have fielded them before in rhinos and while successful, I have not been totally convinced. I think the shock value in drop pods makes them play up to the close range firefight game that marines are good at. Plus when without a drop pod, who is going to let you drive up to a squad of elder jetbikes with farseer in cover to burninate them in one volley?

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

The basic flamers with chem munitions are so much fun. They erase anything that tries to make a run at my big scaries.
