I'm working on building out a tourney list, and just got a Chaos Knight this past Christmas that I'm tempted to use (more so I can put the model on the table than anything else) . Problem is, for the points cost of a Chaos Knight, I could add 5 Chaos Bikers, a second contemptor dread, and some plasma guns to my otherwise bare bones tactical squads. Or substitute one of those for a sorcerer.

So the question is, how effective is a Chaos Knight in a tournament setting? I see it drawing a lot of fire and increasing the longevity of my other units, but I've never played a knight before so I'm hesitant to take it to the Broadside Bash.

Night Lord XIII Company: 6,600 Points, 12W-4L
Skaven Cheese-stealer Renegade Cult: 2,000 points, 0-0
Warboss Spine Squisha's Ork Warband: 3,000 Points, 1W-3L
Carcharadons Astra: 2000 Points, 11-2
Drukhari: 1250 Points, 2-0

Well when you give it a daemon mark you can grimoire it so that it has a 2++ ion shield and 3++ on all sides

And Tzeentch gives that reroll, right?

Chaos knights are better than loyalist ones (1v1) simply due to the "daemon" rule giving them a 5++ on all sides, a normal knight has only an ion shield and no save in CC. Non-Chaos knights have better access to formations as their strength.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Depends on how people rule the Daemon Knight rule. If they say it gains the effect of "Daemon of X", then yes. Otherwise no.

In the ITC, yes.

In other tournament systems, gonna have to check with the TO.

The reason for the ITC is that they are ruling a Daemon Knight of X is also a Daemon of X.

So basically y'all are saying the being a 'Daemon of' grants it the 5++ save correct?

So hypothetically, if I make it a Daemon of Khorne, and then give it Legacy of War: 1st War of Armageddon, I can automatically kick it to 4++ on all sides and in close combat right?

I'm running Night Lords, so Daemoon Codex doesn't really fit in my fluff... (plus only 1 Character so it'd be hard to pull Daemon allies without seriously altering the list)

Pretty sweet, eh? Throw the grimoire on it for a 2++ on all sides.

Legacy's of Ruin can't be taken by Daemon Engines. I'm not sure if 'Daemon Engines' is defined anywhere in the rules. There is a list of units which can't take Legacies (not including Chaos Knights as IA13 predates them) which ends in 'etc.' Ask your opponent/TO but I'd say no, you can't take one.

I'm saying it depends on the tournament format that you will be attending. Play in ITC formats, you're good. Play in non-ITC formats, better check with the TO.

I don't see why not. Those Khorne ones are superb.

I don't see the GW knight being removed. They are very different units than the Renegade knights -- like Space Wolves to Dark Angels. Sure they might look similar, but they play very differently.
