With the new grand Alliance book out is it poor form to mix old units with new ones or take Named Characters? I know it's legal but is it a proper thing to do?

Named characters are perhaps a little faux pas unless you are playing in the Old Worlde. Otherwise it is often a personal choice but can be tricky. For example I have an Empire Cannon. Do I now run it as a "Cannon" from the Grand Alliance book though the crew are meant be be dwarfs for it, or do I keep using the old Empire Cannon Warscroll? Same for my Dwarf Miners - should I use them as warriors with two-handed weapons or the old Warscroll? It gets even more tricky when keyword synergy no longer matches between the old and new warscrolls.
I guess there is no right answer. Perhaps of note is that SCGT did not support warscrolls which hadn't been carried forward (except in the case of entire armies being retired) whereas Adepticon did.

There's no rules saying you can't, but if fluff in writing lists is a big thing for you / your group then pre-end times characters might be a little problematic.

I have no problem with people using old warscrolls, special character or no (I tend to imagine them as a generic version anyway), or finding the closest 'current' warscroll to use for their older models instead.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games. |

I think there is a simple guideline that can be used here: If you are using an old/rep;laced Warscroll for advantage, then the answer should probably be no. If you are using it because you want to do something specific (background-wise) and there is no other option, go for it!

Doesn't matter if there is rules not saying you can't, thing is, is there rules that say you can?

"Advantage" has such a negative ring to it, but there is no crime in wanting to put together a strong list. Some people get enjoyment from that.
I'd say, if the warscroll has been replaced, use the new one. If it has not been replaced, and you have the models, then you don't really have any other choice than to use it, right? For example, I'm not going to throw my 15 Ellyrian Reavers in the garbage just because they haven't gotten any new rules. I will continue fielding them in games where I deem it advantageous to make use of very manouverable cavalry archers.
Similarly, I don't think it's anything wrong with using named characters in your games. Like Ninth, I tend to view them as alternate rules for generic characters, and since the mortal realms are so vast, it is not inconceivable to think that there would be an individual somewhere with abilities matching a hero of old.
Anyway, that's my take on it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Davor wrote:RoperPG wrote:There's no rules saying you can't, but if fluff in writing lists is a big thing for you / your group then pre-end times characters might be a little problematic.

Yes, the basic aos rules state that you deploy units and warscrolls. The old units are obviously units, and they do have warscrolls, so as such the rules do state that they can be used. That doesn't really matter though, the best thing to do would be to just talk to your opponents and discuss what is ok and what isn't ok before games.

I think we can also gleam GW's intent on the matter. The Age of Sigmar app still has warscrolls for all discontinued models, including the Bretonnians and Tomb Kings. If GW intended to render them unusable, they would have removed the warscrolls. Indeed, they've pretty much gone out of their way to say that you can keep using your old stuff.
