I've been using black, but am seeking recommendations.

My bases are usually a coarse sand primed black, layered with GW dawnstone, drybrushed with a bit of white, then washed with agrax earthshade. Any good browns from the GW line that would look ok?

I love using Baneblade Brown. A lot of people use Steel Legion Drab cuz thats what GW uses for the most part. I prefer Baneblade Brown cuz its brighter and not as muddy looking, makes everything stand out more to me.

Depends on what the models are used for.
I pretty much am focused on the new 40k board games.
B@C has black-rimmed bases.
Deathwatch Overkill has earth/drab from Vallejo.

Mine has changed some depending on the army and how it is based. I've used Mournfang Brown, as it is a good middling brown shade on desert or grassy bases, and have used black on Astrogranite or other stone/street type basing jobs.

I usually go with tan, or light Grey depending on the basing scheme. Usually Tan with natural (forest, desert, etc) bases and grey for industrial or urban bases though it's not a firm rule.

I also use Black, but mostly with chaos miniatures and my 10mm sci-fi units. Recently I also experimented with a pale green for some neo-soviet troops and it really looked great against their dark green uniforms.

Since my two armies are both themed on an ash waste/urban rubble and decay style basing I go with black rimmed bases as it complements the grey shades nicely.

To each their own. So long at it's consistent and looks good to you, then go for whatever works.

Take it easy.

Yup. +1 for XV-88.
I always used to use the old snakebite leather and was starting to worry until that came out.

Honestly depends, i tend to end up using pastel colors, but then again, i base each unit differently because that way i can tell them apart on the battle field easier

To many unpainted models to count.

The first GW minis I ever painted were for LotR, and I had the minis from each faction on different color bases. For 40k, I started with Graveyard Earth (from the old Citadel range), and now I use Zandri Dust.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Just getting back into painting but the Vallejo Heavy Charcoal is working for me. It's neutral but not as stark as a black. Been making snow bases with rocks poking out and the dark grey is a nice cool (as in cold) colour which suits them. Given that is a very opaque paint it also covers well even when thinned.

Planning some desert bases too for my Tyranids so thinking of getting the Heavy Ochre for those.

A rich brown is the go-to base color. It makes your miniature appear to be on some sort of expensive wooden plinth and thus more valuable.

My go-to is Doombull Brown (used to be Dark Flesh) for desert or Terracota-ish bases.

Mournfang brown works nicely against "dirt and grass" bases, or if I'm using sandstone colours for rock or flagstones (I work up from XV-88 through Zandri Dist to Ushabti bone.

I also sometimes base just using a dark green flock - Mournfang is perfect with it.

The Fang complements snow bases well,

Black on my Ad Mech with red Martian Ironearth on the base.

In the past I've used a similar colour to the base - Goblin Green against a simple light green flock base, various shades of grey against grey flagstones or an ash-grey base, on occasion Snakebite Leather for a yellowish sandy base.

As an old schooler ...I always did green. Then I changed everything to brown ...mournfang I think it's called now.

But now I just do black and I think it looks the best.

I used to do everything in black and only recently decided to try Steel Legion Drab on the rims, I actually really like the look of it and will probably be leaning towards that from now on

I highlight the sand with Steel Legion Drab and Kharak Stone, so Steel Legion Drab works well on the rims.
