Black exclusively.

It just looks far better than anything else.

Gloss black (but I tend to paint my entire base black, anyways).

The only one that is different is my Tyranids - I do a mud brown to match the "earth" top of the base.

It never ends well

I haven't done a ton of basing truth be told to I usually just use black to touch up the messy areas from painting the miniature

There are a few main camps people are in:

1. Faux wood color: You'll see your mahogany and other rich brown colors.
2. Base-mimicking: Continuing in the color/style of your basing.
3. Stand out: Variety of colors used for various reasons.
4. Nothing: Doesn't touch the black plastic.

I use to adhere to the faux wood doctrine, but have recently been using base-mimicking more and more.

FDM Printer (terrain) also has one of the largest build volumes available for an FDM printer (400mm x 400mm x 450mm) and has an amazing ,05mm build accuracy.

I have always preferred to continue what you see on the base, with the idea that the army looks more cohesive from far away. On a model by model basis though, I do agree that the dirt/wood varieties of brown look better.

Yep, continuing the base theme is how I go. Chiefly for me this means dark grey for my urban-based marines and Inquisition,a kind of fudgy brown for my Guild Malifaux who are on underground desert temple bases (think interiors of The Mummy, yes the Brendan Fraser version...) and the graveyard bases I put any of my horror-themed models on get a dark brown.

If it were worth my time and expense, I would switch all my bases to clear acrylic. May do that sometime down the road, but as of now, that's a few hundred models at least.

For me it depends on the army. I like to theme my bases and paint the rim to match the theme. For example, my Eldar, Dark Eldar & Harliquinds are all based to look like they are on a ruined Craftworld or Maiden world:

My Daemons used to be based according to god (Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch & Slaanesh), but that was too busy, so I repainted them bronze/gold since that was the only unifying color most of my models shared. It is also the color of my dice pips, so it matches quite well:

I also have display boards to match so that when I take pics of them, the basing blends with the background

I prime my bases with the dark brown camo spray paint for nurgle and skaven and just leave the border that color.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

I love Beasty Brown from vallejo for many different armies. However, I use grey on my urban based Arbites and snakebite leather for my desert based Orks.

I use Steel Legion Drab, it contrasts well with the cool turqoise and black I use on my Eldar, while harmonizing with wraithbone white.
