So, After looking at a sculpting thread for HH I though for some special units like my Iron Havoc I could make them unique and such.
But I have Have a question, how often did armor MKs get mixed? I read that Mkv is in reality just a hodge podge of different armor Mks for under supplied legions, and with Iron Warriors being utalitarion more than anything else, I feel they would do this more often for their line troops.
So for example, could I have a Mk 6 head, on a Mk 2 torso and body with Mk4 hands and like Mk3 shoulder pads?

You can build your soldiers in anyway you desire really. Armor mark has no effect on the rules of the game. And in the heresy was bound to happen when full replacements werent available.

That much I know, but Im asking cause I want my army to be "Fluffy" and to make it interesting.

The later into the Heresy, the more likely.
Of course an army that is on constant, brutal campaign without resupply like that is going to have other problems as well.

Basically you can get away with it if you make them look "messed up" like with dirty, scuffed, and corroded armour, occasional pieces that are completely the wrong colour, as though they were ripped from the corpses of fallen foes, that sort of thing.

You have mixed armour marks, including on single Legionaries, from the start.

There's a picture in Betrayal of a Sons of Horus Legionary with just that.

I think it started to be a thing more once the heresy set in. They start turning up at Isstvan 3 as battlefield repairs and as things drag on you start seeing full on heresy armour cobbled together from whatever works.

There are two main schools of thought on the issue of armour mixing:
The original fluff written back in 1st edition stated that the number of operational suits of MkIV dwindled from the outset owing to lack of spare parts, with Mars designing and manufacturing a new suit (MkV) almost immediately (pre-Isstvan V) specifically to make use of existing stockpiles of older components. The unwritten implication being that MkIV was not compatible with the older components, else MkV would have been unnecessary. Ergo no mixed MkII/III & MkIV suits.

This remained canon for 20+ years, then a Black Library author decided to ignore that precedent and say there's no problem mixing armour marks in a single suit and that such suits are called MkV. This has garnered many adherents, the more militant of whom never miss an opportunity to claim that MkV doesn't exist and Forge World have no business producing miniatures in accordance with the previous obsolete fluff.

Forge World appear to be flip-flopping on the issue, with the early books being full of mix-matched suits, whilst Retribution mostly takes the middle ground with references to 'production' and 'non-production' MkV, but then throws in a sidebar noting that the Iron Hands Techmarines are the only ones capable of integrating MkIII & MkIV owing to the suits underlying incompatibility, which given that MkIII was mostly just MkII with extra plates bolted on, would presumably apply to MkII & MkIV as well..

If I may throw in an opinion that compared to those above is likely quite irrelevant and entirely unresearched :

Just do what looks cool to you. They're your dudes, and if you think it looks cool to have Mk.II legs, a Mk.III torso one Mk.IV arm and one Mk.V arm, then by the Emperor post pics so that we can all enjoy.

Yeah, basically what all of these guys said. Even though the fluff for power armor is pretty inconsistent and gets ret-conned a lot, considering how long the armor has been mixed up in 40k for (like, decades old model sets have mixed armor), safe to say it's not biggie.
Unless you're trying to make your legion look like it's JUST setting out from Earth, in which case, I commend your dedication

Latter in the heresy I think it was pretty common. Armour pieces were salvaged from the dead of friend and foe alike, so the Legion armourers would be able to keep the power armour of the living in working order.

It also depends on the identity of your army. I play an Iron Warriors force that was re-armed just before the Heresy, and who remained as Loyalists. Thus Mk.IV is predominant for them, as they were fully equipped with it just before the war broke out, but as re-armament is very hard (Loyalists aren't willing to supply those of questionable loyalty, while Traitors will give them plenty of ammunition, just not in a format they can make much use of) lots of their gear is mixed up.

The idea of using armour plates in different colours is a very cool one. Having an occasional arm or leg painted up as a different legion entirely could look good.
