Not sure where to post this, so I'll post it here...
I'm looking to get into Warhammer AOS or warhammer 40k. Age of Sigmar looks like more fun to me and has really cool fantasy stuff but 40k is more popular and would probably be easier to find games to play, so I'm open to playing whichever game has an army that would suit me better...which means I need to find an army!
I'm not really sure what I need in an army to be honest. In AoS I think the Skaven look like a lot of fun. I love that there are lots of models, they look fun to paint, and they have some sweet siege weaponry. I think that is what I want most in an army- Lots of models to paint, and good siege weaponry. Usually in games I pick whichever faction suits my personality best and stick with them and it works out well...but for these games I have no idea. Other than skaven, Daemons of Nurgle appeal to me. I love their models, the glottkin and forgeworld great unclean one. I found a plague hulk on ebay at a good price, so I have that on the way. Other than my incoming plague hulk I only have the starter box for daemons of khorne and they don't seem cool at all to me, I just wanted something simple to learn to paint with and that's what my LGS had other than boring space marines.
So, essentially what I am looking for in an army, for either game is:
-One with varied and powerful very long-range weaponry (Like the warplock jezzail snipere)
-Lots of units is a pro
-some large monsters is a pro (love the glottkin and some demons are cool)
-Something very unique to the warhammer world and not boring and generic like space marines (Like the classic orcs and goblins, I refuse to say orruks and grots. ew. or the skaven)
-lots of variety in units to pick from (this is the main drawback to demons of nurgle. There just aren't a lot of them....but I love that I could play both games with nurgle forces.)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Definite pro if I could use the models in both games since I don't know who i'll be able to find to play with yet. The armies I am leaning towards are Nurgle forces and Skaven, both greatly appeal to me, but nurgle doesn't seem to have any siege or long range abilities and skaven have a ton. So for fantasy I think maybe mixing them would work well? The plague hulk is essentially a soul grinder and would work well with skaven. Other armies that appeal to me aesthetically are Lizardmen, (Seraphon) Sylvaneth, Beastmen (but I think they're not going to be supported anymore? They're hard to find many of on the GW site), tyranids, (though I don't like the ones with literal guns) Orks, and the Skittari.
I guess above all- I need an army that looks cool, and has enough different units to be flexible since I'm new. I don't want to be like "Oh, I guess I like shooting so I better get a new army since mine can't" or anything like that. I need something that can adapt and grow with me.
Any input at all would be GREATLY appreciated. I have no idea what to get at this point. Also, if you could note the typical playstyle for whichever army you recommend and maybe a suggestion of what units I should start with? I came into some capital with selling off my magic collection recently so don't be shy saying I might need a bunch of things! Thank you for your time!

One thing to note is AoS is not limited by factions. Most people seem to stick within a Grand Alliance, but even that is not required.
That can solve a lot of your problems about diversity. Say you pick Chaos, the whole range is open to you. You could take Skaven for shooting ability, Nurgle for tanky units, whatever else you liked.
Skaven Pestilens and Nurgle Daemons starter boxes happen to pair up well, as they all have the Nurgle keyword. Skaven are more the glass cannon, while Nurgle Daemons are very resilient but don't put out as much damage.
I think it's an interesting time to get into AoS because it seems about to gain a big influx of players with the new ways to play coming this summer.

I know they aren't limited, but It would be more fun for me to start with just one and grow from there I think. I like themed forces best.

I was going to say Demons as well, that way you can play both systems with the same minis. At least with AoS you don't have to buy any books but for 40K you will need to buy the books.
So how does Demons look for you?
One thing depending where you live, finding an AoS game can be really hard. Then again, I can't find a game for 40K or AoS, so I just collect.

What would a good starting point be for a nurgle army, though? Probably 2 starter boxes? Or?
On the GW site, is it just nurgle rotbringers and daemons of nurgle for nurgle things? Or are there some more models under something else? How do nurgle armies play?

Note that all of the Skaven Pestilens stuff has the Nurgle keyword, meaning they benefit from a decent share of abilities on the daemon/human side of Nurgle (and vice versa). Plagueclaw catapults are a great support artillery for otherwise short-ranged nurgle forces too. I'd reccomend getting a start collecting box of daemons of nurgle and a start collecting box of pestilens. Add in the plague hulk as a nurgle soul grinder and you'd have a really diverse force to play around with and find out what you like.

Aren't chaos warriors with Mark of nurgle also considered to have the keyword nurgle? Idk much about the rules but having some burly warriors to help the daemons might be good. Maybe not too many though considering your theme.

The Starter Box (with FLGS discount) is a bargain. You then have as you've said: Nurgle Rotbringers - https://www.games-workshop.com/en-IE/Warhammer?N=102302+4294965325&Nu=product.repositoryId&qty=12&sorting=rec&view=table&categoryId=cat440002a-flat Daemons of Nurgle - https://www.games-workshop.com/en-IE/Warhammer?N=102302+4294965299&Nu=product.repositoryId&qty=12&sorting=rec&view=table&categoryId=cat440002a-flat There's quite a bit in there with some fun, flavourful characters (though webstore only). If you like physical items I'd recommend the Grand Alliance: Chaos book. All the warscrolls are free in the app. But some people like having all of a single Grand Alliance and scrolling through it to get ideas. Good material for reading on the throne. Then you have Forgeworld Nurgle units. For example, like this: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Daemon-Plague-Toads-of-Nurgle or this: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Plague-Ogres Automatically Appended Next Post: Cptskillet wrote:Aren't chaos warriors with Mark of nurgle also considered to have the keyword nurgle? Most if not all neutral/unmarked Chaos units have the option to be marked by one God. So you could also have Nurgle Warriors and a Nurgle Grinder.

As an added bit of potentially useful information, both the Glottkin and Orgotts Daemonspew (one of the Maggoth Lords) have command abilities that will buff any Nurgle unit be it daemon, mortal, or skaven. Putrid Blightkings also have an ability like that, and Epidemius will buff any Nurgle as well.

Nurgle is a great starting point because they blend so well with skaven and slave to the darkness (warriors of chaos) Dont forget nurgle has blightkings aswell! they are great units that can really throw down. If you still dont think nurgle has enough love take a look at the forgeworld AoS, they have tamurkhans horde which is a killer nurgle warrior/daemon army! Sure forgeworld gets expensive but this allows for sweet conversions, make your own plague trolls/ogres, through a blight king on a lizardmans dino and call him tamurkhan, really a lot of potential here!
As for on the table, go nurgle daemons before skaven, I play both and i can tell you the skaven die quickly.......very quickly, and for just starting out you might not find it fun being tabled every game to stormcast as you learn how to best use the rats.

What would you recommend I start with for just nurgle without skaven? What are some good supplements to the start collecting box? Nurgle appeals to me even more than skaven I'm just not sure how to build a nice balanced force of nugle. Automatically Appended Next Post: I guess, are there ANY ranged forces at all for nurgle? Or do they just send in something big like a soul grinder or the glottkin and attack around it? AoS is basically pretty similar to 40K in terms of the core movement and combat rules. Obviously in AoS there are more units that don't have any shooting weapons and have to get into melee to do anything.
40K is a lot more complicated in the amount of special rules in all the different books and codexes, but offers many units like vehicles and airplanes that aren't available in AoS. However all the books are a lot more expensive. It is in fact possible to play AoS with totally free downloads.
If you wanted to go for 40K, the Tau army has a good range of units including giant battlesuits with heavy long range weapons and even a moving fortress (useful for sieges.)

Not sure what you mean by Beastmen, but if it's what I am thinking, didn't that line get discontinued? So it will be hard to buy them because I am not sure if GW replaced them with new minis or just stopped making them and they are all sold out now.
