I know it's a daft question, but what would you guys say their speciality lies in? Close quarter fire fights? Assault?

Or in their lore? What does their background suggest??

Depends on which unit.

Blood Claws are head-on assaults.
Grey Hunters are close-quarter firefights - they won't beat everything in melee, but they can generally beat anything that's been given a couple of bursts of rapid fire in the process of getting to them.

As a rule, their background primarily paints them as melee fighters, but whilst ferocious, they're cunning rather than out-and-out bezerkers (like the Flesh Tearers). Hence a big focus on outflank in their rules.

It's a tragic state of affairs when a tabletop game as complex as this one must lean on frickin' Outflank to signify cunning strategems.

Combined arms multistage assaults.

You soften the target with long fang heavy weapons, then smash in your bloodclaws supported by a second wave of grey hunters.

In terms of melee specialists, Space Wolves are the ones who most like getting charged rather than doing the charging. Since they're I4, and have the counter-assault rule (which is essentially "you count as charging when getting charged") you are able to pin your opponent between a rock (your shooting) and a hard place (your assault power).

This is enhanced by their new detachment mega-thingy, which lets them join assaults with their other units IN THE OPPONENTS ASSAULT PHASE.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I'd say the theme they're meant to have (when GW aren't butchering the lore) is that they're close range fighters. If you can beat them in melee they'll rapid fire Bolters and if you beat them in shooting they'll hit you with swords. They get close and either rapid fire or charge depending on whats best with Claw units and Fangs providing specialisations at each category.

So I haven't read the new codex and supplements cover to cover, but it used to be Drop Pod assaults and Outflanking if you look at just about every single SW unit, they have Acute senses. The scouts used to be able to outflank on the opponents table edge, and charge after doing so. They could do all sorts of outflank stuff, and it was THE alpha strike marine army. SW in lore are a ferocious close quarters army that does not follow the codex astartes or chapter tactics. They have separated themselves from the rest of their brothers and do what they see is fit for the imperium. Current lore reflects this pretty strongly. Their ranged combat has never been great in lore, but was pretty good on the table top for a short period of time in 5th edition when they could field loads of missile launchers and special weapons.

SW in lore have always been the Alpha Strike army. They go for the throat of the enemies army with fast surgical strikes, always specializing in close combat.

On moon miranda.

Ostensibly they are a close combat oriented Space Marine army with some "tricksy" sprinkled on top. In practice this varies wildly.

In 7E they're typically built around a TWC deathstar of some sort, while in 5E they typically were a min/max heavy weapon gunline army.

Their fluff has been all over the place in recent years giving contradictory views on what they are and how they work

Acute Senses is something they have had forever, it used to be for enhanced Night Fight effectiveness, now its Outflank enhancement.

Primarily close combat, drinking heavily and frost weapons. Bit like Russel Crowe without the frost weapons. Unless he hits you with an ice lolly.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Eh how fitting the answer is right here https://youtu.be/ihskUz0obzY?t=19m7s

Space Wolves specialty should be Assault and Close Quarter Battle, they are also master of rapid maneuvering and deployment allowing them to outflank their foes to better kill them with their wolf claws and wolf club!

Warhammer 40K is complex?

Compared to most true wargames, 40K is a dice-rolling and model-removal exercise.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Granted I don't follow 40k fluff as closely as many, but my impression was they mistrust the *Imperium* but were the "Emporer's" thugs, which isn't really paradoxical. It's like being loyal to your mother or father but mistrusting the rest of your family.

Eh, with Space Wolves fluff...who knows, it's some of the most incoherent, contradictory and poorly written stuff GW has put out.
