So a few of us at the FLGS decided to do a 2v2 event this Thursday. We don't know who we'll be matched up with (sm, orks, csm, gk are in the pool) to form a 1500 point list, or who we'll be fighting. We also won't know what mission or deployment type either till after teams are selected. I wanted to bring something centered around scoring, while also being able to take down a wide range of things at a decent range.

The Captain sits in back field with the Devs conferring shrouded to the LCs. Snipers camp objectives. Combat squad the Assault marines into a melta bomb group, and a flamer group and target accordingly.

What do you guys think? I'd like to have a power weapon or two, but points are tight at 750 when you want bodies and LCs.

That’s a lot of scouts for camping. Like the numbers you see in full 1,500 point lists, not half ones. Easy points? Cut one in half. Need more? Do both.

Seems a waste to have the captain sitting back. You know he wants to be out with the assault marines. While not quite shrouded, you could have a techmarine boosting ruins for less points. Or a ML2 librarian for other buffs. Or a librarian with the armor... Even backfield camping, I think he should have a power weapon. Probably a claw if you want to keep the SS.

Devs are fine

I like HBs in my sniper squads, but understand they are frowned upon by most people. The only issue I really have here is the number of bodies for the list size.

Your AM sarge really wants to be a vet with a power sword. And I’d try to find the points to make it 2x5 men, both with sarges and flamers and MBs. Another option would be to swap them out for vanguard vets. It’s not like you are using formations, and the cheap power weapons and extra choppyness could come in handy.

On the topic of formations, low point games like this can be a place to play one, rather then a CAD. Some of them fit nicely into the points.

I went with CAD for objective secured and scout bodies to insure I have squads on as many objectives as possible, and a squad for line breaker. I did this because I want my team mate to focus on offence while I focus on scoring (as VPs are shared).

There were talks of upping it to 1k lists (2k vs 2k) in subsequent weeks, and my plan is to add in a VVS and upgrades all around when that happened. I appreciate the upgrade input.

As for librarians, I don't use them. Not a fan of psykers (ironic, as I'm playing an army painted as Death Spectres). And share an equal distaste for fielding TMs. I have the heart of a legionnaire I guess. I love my Captains. I use them in every list, for better or worse.

Thanks for the input, Nevelon. The idea for the HBs on the scout squads makes me want to put bolters on all of them and run IF chapter tactics and put the Captain in a drop pod with a 9 man Tactical squad (with a HB, ofc!) Instead of the Assault Squad!

Just some musing while at work:

If focusing on objective secured units etc you could go:

Gladius Strike Force:

Core:Battle Demi-Company

1x Captain (90)
5x Tac (70)
5x Tac (70)
5x Tac (70)
5x Assault: Jump packs (85)
5x Devs (70)

Auxiliary:10th Company

5x Scouts (55)
5x Scouts (55)
5x Scouts (55)

This would give you 130 pts to spend on upgrades of units. Example: with devastators only give 3 heavy weapons (as a 5 man group you want 2 as meat shields anyway). Moreover, all battle demi-company units are objective secured + you get 1 tactical doctrine to use + benefits of chapter. I cant remember if raven guard have their own special formations atm (am at work).

If open to other chapters I would suggest Iron Hands and do a Fist of Medusa strike force and go:

Fist of Medusa Strike Force

Core:Battle Demi-Company

1x Captain\Chaplain (90)
5x Tac (70)
5x Tac (70)
5x Tac (70)
5x Assault: Jump packs (85)
5x Devs (70)

Auxiliary: Honoured Ancients

1x Dreadnought (100)

This would still give you objective secured with the demi-company units, the one tactical doctrine+ Iron Hands benefits, but gives you an extra 65pts for upgrades (195pts)

Just some thoughts anyway.
Cheers,
SC
