Hi there,
what is your favourite regiment ( only the regiments with models, I may have forgotten some) ?
And why ?
Personally, I really like the Steel Legion aesthetics and Elysians Drop Troops, but it is difficult to point a "favourite regiment".

Steel Legion, no question. Just sci-fi enough for the genre, just anachronistic enough to be 40K.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

The Steel Legion is extremely manly and interesting (they can use Ork weapons!) So I picked them, but I also really like the Death Korps. I wish I knew more about them, though. Does anyone know if they have novels or something that I can revel in?

I really like dreaming up my own regiments...but if I had to pick an 'official' favorite, it'd be the Death Korps. There's just something about needing Commissars, not to hold the line, but to keep them from martyring themselves too soon...not to mention the Death Riders. Also, this bit of fan art.

Spoiler:

I believe the artist said that the girl is a hippie protester and is about to find out what the Imperium thinks about love solving all problems, but I like to think that she's thanking them for defending the planet against whatever and they just...don't get it.

Why would they need thanks? They're the Death Korps.

Elysian Drop Troopers are close behind, though, because drop troopers! Whoo! And if the Savlar Chem-Dogs had official models, they might have snagged my vote.

Like Spinner, I like making up my own regiments, but out of the Official ones (regardless of whether they have models) I like the Death Korps, the Mordians, the Tallarns and the Harakoni Warhawks.

Tallarns have always been a favorite, due to the whole desert/raider theme which branches off from the usual "we have reserves" tactics, their history with the Iron Warriors (my preferred CSM's) and the eldar, and the fact that they are considered ultra-religious by the standards of the 41st millenium (try to picture a bunch of Tallarn and SoB together).

Harakoni always struck me as a little more exoctic than the Elysians, also now they are neglected in favour of said Elysians.

Mordians, who doesn't like the idea of normal humans saying "screw cover" to the universe and bringing a ludicrous amount of armour/infantry co-organization. These guys/gals are the ballier versions of regular gaurdsmen. Also, they intimidate Commissars and set standards for them. Badass.

I used to dislike the Korps. I found them just too grimdark, too over the top, and most of all too impractical. However, art/fanfiction pieces like the one Spinner mentioned helped change my mind, and after reading dead men walking they are certainly among my favorites.

If you allow yourself to be killed and ingested, your soul is forfeited.

I dunno, I kinda like them all.

I got into metal IG a while back when I found some Tallarns on clearance. I like the whole look and head scarves mean fewer faces and hair to paint!

So a Tallarn =I= henchmen squad became an IG vet squad became an IG army.

Then I discovered Necromunda redemptionists who followed the same pattern.

Now I have upwards of 70 Tallarn, 100+ Necromunda gangs, 50+ Mordians and 50+ classic Cadians.

I ticked off the Tallarn BTW, it's their fault.

I know I might catch something but I like Cadians. Both the aesthetics and the book Cadian Blood make them super neat to me.

That's the way I always interpreted that piece of fan art. Just a patriotic young girl showing her appreciation, and such appreciation being alien to the Kriegers. The old woman in the background apparently not being used to such either. Everybody else was just acting nonchalant.

If she is supposed to be a 41st Millennium hippie, it would have be better conveyed if there was a squad of Arbites stomping her into bean paste.

Always liked Valhallans, the Russian theme fits well with Commissars and conscripts. I have one squad of them but I'm not a fan of metal models so I've just sort of stuck to the plastic Cadians for the most part.

If they were available in plastic I definitely would have gone full on Valhallans painted in a Russian WWII scheme.

Only regiments with models ?

Well, technically , if i look at the GW catalog, and look at Dawn of War Soulstorm, the only significant difference uniform-wise between Cadians and the 252nd Karava Conservator regiment are the flags and decals.

So, yeah, Cadians . ( except really the 252nd )

Then Death Korps of Krieg , except really just the cavalry arm and Thud Guns. and like i would "borrow" Thud Guns from the kriegers, I would borrow Taurus Vernators , Malcador Infernus, Valdor Tank Hunters, and Space marine Stalker AA , and not bother myself with where and how I got them , or whether they properly belong in my TO&E .

Tanith "First and Only" for me, the novels were incredible and although you can't get standard models they're still my fav. The style of the regiment and the background is just great.

Quite a big fan of steel legion too, as mentioned the aesthetics and tanks.

Cadians are great too.

Death Korps followed closely by Vostroyan, both for fluff and aesthetic. Death Korps are grimdark to a whole other level in my book: Carried on a generations long war that turned their planet into a nuclear waste, so took the fight underground and waged a war through tunnels. The Imperium, once reconnecting with the planet, found in the Death Korps a fighting force that had already lost all its humanity and said, yeah, then the Admech proceeded to give them a cloning device in order to mass produce these broken, shells of human beings in order to send them to battle fields across the galaxy.

On a related tangent, I really wish GW would produce plastic sprues for the other variety of Guard. The variety of the Guard is what always made them fun for me. Hell, a Mordian Guard regiment was always fun to see, since it just looked so strange, but somehow not-quite-out-of-place, battling Chaos Space Marines or Orks, etc. I would likely collect a detachment of every type if they did this...(except Catachan, never could quite get behind them)

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

Of the ones listed, it's a toss up between Steel Legion, Death Korps, and the Elysians.

Outside of the list, Harakoni Warhawks.

Praetorian Guard. For the 19th century British colonial feel.

However, before the Praetorians were released, my favorites were the Valhallans because of the Great Patriotic War* Russian Red Guard look. Had ideas for printing up tiny WW2 Soviet propaganda posters to decorate ruined buildings. Their homeworld would have been called Novyy Rodina or "New Motherland". [Новый родина] As it was, I was given some surplus space marine figures and a land speeder, so I went with Blood Angels instead. So no IG for me.

A thought I had for my hypothetical Praetorian Guard regiment was to vary it by using different British Army units. The bulk would be Praetorian Guard of course, but the Stormtroopers would be WWII "Red Devils" paratroopers, and the armor would be WWII 8th Army "Desert Rats". I'd have liked to used Ratlings in the Napoleonic uniform of the 95th Rifles, but my conversion skills were not (and still aren't) up to that.

Another homebrew IG possibility is using 28mm Napoleonic plastics and converting them. IIRC, there's a thread here were someone did just that with French Old Guard Grenadiers.

For Tanith 1st & Only, Victoria Miniatures makes Border World Rangers.

The Death Korps star in Imperial Armour – The Siege of Vraks from Forge World if you want rules and background, especially for their siege regiments which are even more hardcore than the rest of them.
As for background: Krieg used to be a nice place. Then there was a rebellion, which turned into civil war, which turned into five hundred years of nuclear warfare. The planet's surface is now close enough to being devoid of life that virus bombardment probably wouldn't work. Anyway, the rebels lost/were reduced to radioactive ash and the loyalists 'won' but now they feel permanently shamed that they even had to fight a civil war in the first place and are now hardcore Imperial Cult fanatics. More importantly they got so used to warfare, and gakked up their planet so bad, that soldiers are now their primary industrial output and sole export. And they mean industrial. Like they use artificial insemination, hormone treatments, pre-mature c-sections, and intensive care on their women to ensure they get a pair of twins every nine months instead of a singleton ever twelve or so. Each one of these children is then given a number instead of a name, indoctrinated in the Imperial Cult as practiced on Krieg, trained to be a soldier for the Emperor, and shipped out in bulk when the batch, er, regiment, is ready.
Also, because their planet is so fethed, they all have to wear respirators and NBC kit at all times outside of special safe rooms and this habit is so ingrained that no non-Krieger has ever seen a living Krieger's face.
However, never let it be said that the Death Korps are all basically interchangeable clones with a death-wish; they have individuality and have been observed to be clearly able to distinguish each other, as well as express personal ambitions, such as precisely how they wish to die for the Emperor…

Vostroyans, the steampunk and fluff does it for me. So much possibilities in that army, it should have been made a 4+ armor save, semi horde with lots of situational elites/fast attack like good cavalry, goliath proxies, bear bodyguards for the officers, blood hound (auspex), and penitent engines (clockwork robots?). Just my opinion.

Tallarn desert raider are my second favourite. The aestethics of them are nice, but I think they are better suited for a skirmish game, and look like something that would be fielded in large groups.
