Subject: Which Combi-Weapon for Sternguard?

So I am just about to assemble my second half of Squad Number Two of my Drop Pod Sternguard. The first squad has 5 Combi-Meltas. My question is, should I put the same on Squad Number Two, or out Combi-Grav or Combi-Plasma? I don't have any other form of Grav in my army, so I am leaning Combi-Grav instead of Melta. Is this a sound plan?

I’m going to suggest bare bones. Or 3 bolters, 2xHF.
But if you are going to run combis, and already have 5 melta, I’d go grav.
You are podding, right? If you plan on rhinos/foot, I’ll recommend naked even stronger, and then plasma as a back up pick if you insist.

I think Grav is best left for other, more easily dedicated units, but seeing as it's being dropped in by pod they'll do well. But I also like Flamers so they can double up on anti-infantry.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)
2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)
Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan! |

Definitely podding. So Grav it is! Since I run three Drop Pods, one with Pedro/ HG/Librarian, the other two with Sternguard, which one of the Sternguard Pods should come in first, Grav or Melta? I have Heavy Flamers on Land Speeder Storms for Anti-Infantry (much sadness over the FAQ that nerfed my drive-by capability).

This is going to depend a great deal on your opponent's list. If he's got a vehicle you want to take out quickly, it'll be the melta. Otherwise you probably want the grav. This of course is flip-flopped if your opponent has any kind of extra defense for the first turn of the game.

I am actually okay with that. Having some more tactical versatility is great. I suppose I could try and hold back on the Grav until the second turn the Sternguard are down to gain more shots. But 10 Grav shots is bound to put the hurt on something. Poison Ammo can make up the difference on MCs (not GCs...).

What chapter are you running? 2 heavy flamers can work wonders in either the salamanders OR ultras if tiggy is coming in with them for the storm of fire warlord trait.
If neither of those I suppose grav is (as it often is) probably the best.

Crimson Fists. So I don't give up my Bolters too easily, hence Combis instead of full on Special Weapons.

Combi-grav. Unless you are salamanders, then combi-melta.

I have decided on one squad of each. Two ten-man squads, one with five Combi-Grav, the other with five Combi-Melta.
