I've been thinking about starting a White Scars army, the idea of massed bikes is really appealing to me.

Are they overly competitive? Will people get upset if I bring a white scars list (consisting pretty much entirely of bikes) to a friendly game?

These biker lists are completely absent in my current area and I think it'll add a lot of flavour, plus I've always avoided bikes in the past for some reason.

Almost every high placing SM army in major tournaments has been White Scar. I've never played with or against it directly but that says to me they fall into the highly competitive range.

If you are looking for all bike you might consider Dark Angels instead. They still perform well and have an all bike option with Ravenwing, but don't seem to be quite as dominant.

Plus the Ravenwing bikers get Stasis and rad bombs, TL plasma weapons on Ravenwing Knights, Sammael's awesome jet bike, and some rending Corvus hammer power weapons.

Consider Ravenwing also, and remember that you can mix and match them any way you want to because DA have no chapter tactics.

RW bikers are more expensive but they are a bit more elite force than WS are. The flyers are garbage and you can't even field them in a mono-RW army, you have no AA and no ObSec.

On the plus side, RW are more durable and Black Knights are most of the time a damn good investment on the table. Every RW unit has Scout and rerollable Jink saves.

I decided against Ravenwing because I don't find Dark Angels interesting, while I really like the fluff of White Scars.

Also, I don't have the DA codex!

I'm sure it'd be ok to paint them the scheme of my WS successor chapter but switch between RW and WS rules depending on the setting - friendly games I could use RW and competitive environments I could use WS.

That Hit 'n' Run though.

IIRC you end up with hit and run on most units either way.

A few bikes is good. Make some use of born in the saddle.

The top tier builds for White Scars are Gladius (with Khan, so your free Razorbacks can Scout/Outflank onto objectives), Hunters Eye in any Grav squad and Centurions as you can't tarpit them now. Bike armies are less competitive than the aforementioned.

That's what I thought. While I'm going for an all out bike list with the occasional speeder and scouts.

If you're looking for WS, then go check out the White Scar Legion upgrades for some sweet Mongol-themed resin goodness. Alternatively you could use some of the less evil looking CSM top knot heads.
