As the title says, I'm looking to build an Ork force and would like some advice on what I should purchase.
I know that with it being a horde army it could be potentially expensive so am after people's thoughts and opinions on what I should start with.
My only purchases so far have been a unit of ork boys, lootas and one pain boy and one mek boy.
If it helps I'm going to theme it as an Bad Moonz force and I'm also aware Orks aren't very competitive at the moment.

Best way to start is to figure out what kind of army you are looking to run. Basically for Orks you pick a delivery system and your build around it such as the following or a combination of them.
Bikes
Trukks
Battlewagons
Footslogging
Walkers
Without a plan to get your Orks into the fight (to shoot, chop, whatever) in a relatively quick and safe manner you won't survive the enemy shooting. Pick a method of delivery and go with it as Orks are all about redundancy. Never expect 1 unit (unless its of a good enough size) to get the job done so having multiple tools to solve a problem is a good thing. Be it a casual or competitive list Orks are one of the armies that really need a solid game plan to operate.

Also Bad Moonz are a bunch of gitz with more teef then proper orky sense.

I like the idea of lots of truks zooming across the board loaded up with boyz, maybe with a battle wagon and some bikes thrown into the mix.
I understand walkers aren't in the best place at the moment so I was going to skip Killer Kans and dreads in favour of more
boyz.
I noticed the ork boyz box set has quite a few spare parts so I also wondered if anybody knows where I can pick up some cheapish torsos or legs to get the best amount of models out of the boxes.
I picked Bad Moonz quite simply because of the look and I found a nice painting guide I'm going to follow, but knowing me I'll paint up a few mobz in different colours

Start with the basic requirements listed to field an army, then move on from there. The Detachments allow for over lap should you decide to swap (i.e. many include Boyz, Painboy, etc.) up some of your units, unless you go with something like Commandos, Stormboyz, etc.

Lootas are a good choice, and after my first game I picked up another box. Rolling a 1 or 2 is heart breaking, and you'd be surprised at how fast they can be whittled down (even at the back of the deployment zone). As far as Boyz go, I built them as Sluggas, but it depends on how you intend to play. Ork BS is poor across the board, and I prefer to run with squads not in a vehicle. Your Initiative will be lacking in most fights too, so those extra attacks can make up for small losses before you even had a chance to swing.

Once you have a few squads built I would grab some Trukks (unless you want to run Boyz in larger groups) for your foot soldiers. There are other options mentioned of course, but with a Mek I'd imagine you wanted to run a vehicle list. Battlewagons should last longer in a firefight, but I wouldn't expect either the Trukk or BW to last long after the troops get out. Have fun!

i didn't realise how good lootas can be (potentially) so I'll definitely be investing in more of these, perhaps even try and convert some of my boyz.
I have some old (circa 3rd edition) models that I'll use to bulk out the units but they look quite different to today's models, they should help in conversions though.
Due to the low bs should I look to utilise as many template weapons as I can?
Also are defkoptas worth taking?
Do people use gretchin anymore?

After all the changes from the FAQ and the piss poor rules and suppliment, my advice is don't.

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

Some of those bits may or may not be useful for you (Shootas, Big Shootas/RL, Choppa/Slugga), but you can always use them for conversions with other models as well... For example, the Trukk doesn't come with a RL.

I most recently I used the extra Mek body bits from my Lootas to make an additional Big Shoota, with gun parts from the Boyz and Nobz. I only mention that as after a few boxes you could probably start piecing together additional models.

I like Lootas as they are a cheap unit with good range. Their BS is still poor, but at least you get D3 shots to hopefully compensate a bit. With potentially 24 shots on just a group of eight, you should be able to hit something from four feet away. Decent STR for the point cost too, as much of the army needs to break out the Power Klaws for things with wheels/treads.

I don't have a lot of template weapons currently, but I'm building an army as well. You may be able to interchange some Lootas for them depending on how you like to play. Burna Boyz are there too with Flame templates, but I have yet to build them as anything but Lootas... May add a box soon though.

I've used spellcrow running legs to make an extra boy/nob per box. In total you get 12 bodies per box. 10 boys, 1 nob and 1 rokkit/big shoota. I like the running legs to make dynamic nobs.

If you are going for some speed in trukks deffkoptas are great for grabbing objectives and harassing units for cheap while your trukk speed forward. Warbikers are also really good. Don' ferget 'bout a propah Warboss to lead the 'ellow gitz too!

I was wondering if Meganobz were viable.
I have some old lead ones already painted as Bad Moonz so I can fit these into the list straight away.
I would probably get the boss to lead these
