Hi everyone,
Just a thought that popped into my head. For me it was reading with a focus to read what is actually said as opposed to what is intended. It helps with proofreading I believe.

I... actually don't know. Help?

Not really 'work place', but I know a lot about handling tools and glues in woodworking in school. Also, I can blend prefectly in arts class.

Not 40k exactly, but painting for wargaming has help my fine motor skills, which is handy for work in a lab (mineral separates to be specific).

Giving attention to the same (mentally engaging) thing for several hours helped in school and undergrad too.

5. Vocabulary to describe the commpartmentalisation of useage of the same resource ( casual, competitive, recreational 40k)

Probably more, honestly 40k has, barring physical injury involving crafting tools, had only good side effects on my life.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

Doing a tedious task repeatedly and with very little result. Understanding that that one step that you spent hours on needs to be repeated twenty or thirty times more and the best way to do that is to just do it. Joy can come later in life.

I think I need a new hobby....

Hmm, I'm not really a great hobby guy and tend to avoid painting. I think its interesting so many of you brought up the fine motor skills and patience.

How about the act of playing and learning the game? I don't know how much strategic thinking comes up in a work place. I'm trying to think of useful draws to market to workplace aged people and "learning to deal with difficult people" isn't exactly the best opening line.

I like what selym said about memorization. I definitely know what you mean. Just keeping the matrix of the 4 types of saves and the ways to get around them is insane.

Making poor choices with spending money and living with the consequences as they collect dust on the shelf. This helps you make better choices in money managment.

Coping with not getting what you want for over 4 years in regards to a new codex. You cant always get what you want and you dont always get what you need (Seriously? an update on Black legion and Crimson Slaughter? instead of a new codex ) you just have to deal with it and it sucks to be you. This helps you deal with not getti g the budget increase or the equipment you need or the new computers you need for work.

Learning that complaining about something to GW staff or even on internet forums about the unfairness of the game does absolutely nothing unless you are a women and then its called nagging your man to do chores. This helps you learn how to be more resourceful and independent.

Learning that people are 100% serious about the game rules RAW or RAI and the common legalnese rule lawyering for an advantage. GW rules are so poorly written you actually have to learn how to READ. Thankfully the newest FAQ solved many of the gross misinterpretations. This helps you read legal documents when you are in trouble or need to read ambiguous laws. Or find loop holes to exploit.

Learning about the unscrupulous ways big companies make money. Publishing Novels as rule books. Taking 1 book and separating it into several books and slapping on a hard cover and more fluff and multiply profit by 400%. This will help your marketing skills.

Creating model kits with missing upgrades or not enough of something to force you to buy more boxes or a special $10 bits kit for that one friggen gun upgrade you really want. Marketing skills again.

Very good at eyeballing distances, especially in the 1-24" range. I get a lot of weird looks for that. In many games I play I can tell if the player is in or out of range before the tape measure even comes out. I can also eyeball similar distances at work, and people tend to get very annoyed when I'll bluntly say "that's not going to fit" and I'm right by about half an inch

Other skill would be blunt odds, statistics, and learning to "hope for the best, plan for the worst". I will usually have 2 to 3 fail-safes or backup plans in place for anything I do, and it has saved my butt in game and in real life many times.

It actually gives me hope for the future and that maybe, just maybe the little people can overcome the big powerful jerks if we are willing to drown them in blood and lasbolts

I successfully got all the religious people off my backs when I officially listed my religion as "Khornate".

I later had to amend this.

to "Nurglite".

Bonus part to this is that I can claim every single sick day as a day of worship. No one has ever asked me about anything weird I did ever again.

40k gives me one more unusual thing to talk about with people

When talking with people that matter, I find it most helpful to have interesting things to talk about that are unexpected and don't matter. So, video games, golf, and hockey are out because they are too pedestrian. Politics is often too touchy a subject, though if you talk about strange things like bills of attainder, or Schneider-Ammann (the Swiss president) you're safe -- the problem being knowledge of obscure subjects may impress some and bore others.

But topics like 40k and the amazingly intelligent mother raccoon under my deck (both with accompanying pictures) are things that fascinate people and keep them genuinely engaged in conversation.
