Just trying to speed up my edge highlighting on weapons. Any grey and white art pencils you use or reccomend to cut some time out of edge highlighting?

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

Can't say I'd use them for highlighting, except maybe on metallic black armour (but that's not something I'd edge anyway), but they are good for weathering. hb-2b are the best I find, good for doing laser burns/scorch marks/shallow cuts in armour, that kind of thing.

Honestly I don't think it'll save you a whole lot of time.

People do use pencils for highlighting and weathering. Decent quality water colour pencils are popular choices, but it's more for the effect they give rather than time saving I think.

AllSeeingSkink - That video is genius! The technique is perfect for weathering details on small scale models for games like Dropzone Commander & Flames of War.

I will definitely be putting it to good use in the future. Thanks for sharing

You can do some nice things with water colour pencils. They're good for paint scratches and you can also do things like rain effects, sort of drawing the rain effects on then using a wet brush to wash them out.

The main reason I haven't bought any yet is because I would want a huge set and they aren't exactly cheap, a 72 colour set is in the realm of $100.

Iv tried on tanks before.

you have to take it SUPER soft or else your will tear through your paint.

its basically not worth it.

Now using graphite pencil to detail worn metal areas? go nuts. it works super well. you can also take graphite powder to make tank tracks look REALLY cool if you base them in a rusty brown first.

Even though I've not yet got the water colour pencils, I have used artists pencils on tanks before.... I have no idea what you're talking about as far as tearing through paint is concerned. I never took off any paint with any of the artist pencils I tried, it never even entered my brain that it might happen because it didn't even feel like the paint underneath was at risk. And that's primarily on unvarnished models.

Maybe you need a better primer or something?

You may have a problem with them rubbing off, I know pencil never really sticks to anything varnished I use it for free hand stuff bcause I can wipe it off most paints.

Or smudging when touched or rubbed with fingers.

You do realize that you apply the pencil before you seal the model?

ya but i am not sure whats what, when it scrubs off. I painted a model used a fine tip pen for tattoos and then after a couple days I varnished it. The varnish made most of it disappear then after a white where the ink was slid off the model with what i am asuming with the varnish. I am not sure if it was because oil paint was applied first or not, just that the ink never really dried and ad... Forget the spelling stuck to the base coat.
