As I take a Dev. squad 10 in size and buy them a dedicated rhino can I combat squad them into their dedicated and also a fast attack rhino?

Can they start the game embarked on both transports?

Sure. Any unit can begin the game in any transport.

The only restriction is that a dedicated transport can only start the game with the unit who bought it as a DT inside. So, you can't buy a rhino as a DT with devastators and start with tac marines inside it.

But when you combat squad, the marines become separate units, and act as such.

Branching off from this slightly, a Gladius only gets free dedicated transports, right?

Only Drop Pods, Rhinos and Razorbacks.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Correct. So no free Drop Pods for Centurions or whatever.

Which you couldn't take as part of a gladius/battle demi-company anyways.

Centurions? Centurion assault and devastator squads are options in the Battle Demi-company formation.

I think he means the drop pod part

Indeed.

You can take drop pods as DT unit upgrades but have no fast attack slots with which to take non-dedicated pods.

And per the new FAQ you couldn't even take a CAD, pay for the drop pod as a fast attack unit and put the centurians in it(because gw forgot that 2 different detachments from the same faction are also battle brothers)

This is not true. Levels of Alliance only consider the Factions of the unit. Detachments are not ever noted as a consideration for Ally rules.

Same faction does not initiate Ally rules, so not even considered as limited as Battle Brothers are in the FAQ. Even with different Chapter Tactics (Charcaradons being an exception).

Tyranids.

Only battle brothers with tyranids.

No sub-factions like farsight enclaves.

If you are reading the allies rules as only unit-to-unit classifications then no unit can ever start in any transports as factions are always battle brothers with themselves on a unit by unit basis.

Genestealer Cult.

Not what I said. When two units are near each other, the Factions of the units determine their Ally status. Same Faction does not initiate the Ally rules since they are the default rules of "friendly units".

From the second paragraph of Levels of Alliance:
"To represent this, we have several categories of alliances, each of which imposes certain effects on the game. The Allies Matrix below shows the levels of alliance between units that have different Factions in the same army."

In addition, when going through the Allies rules, detachments do not come up once.

Genestealer cults?

The allies rules don't tell you how to treat different detachments, just different factions.

Are genestealer cults a different faction? Or are they even referenced to as being ally-able to tyranids?

Farsight enclaves are no longer a different faction, nor do they have a caveat that they may be taken as a Allied Detachment with other Tau Empire faction primary detachments(meaning if your warlord comes from either vanilla tau empire or a "farsight enclaves detachment", then you cannot have the other as an Allied Detachment).

So even if genestealer cults have the tyranid faction and the caveat that they are able to be taken in an allied detachment and are considered battle brothers; then either they are not(they are just faction tyranids) and most factions have no battle brothers, or the text(being a direct copy-paste from 6th) in the first 2 paragraphs fails to account for the clearly changed intention of the matrix and allowance for multiple detachments, and the units from each detachment treat eachother accordingly.

This isn't even an issue of poor rules writing; it is one of lazy rules writing(copy-pasye without editing for changed rules)

They have their own unique Faction symbol on their datasheets (as can be seen HERE starting on page 9).

Correct, and Battle Brothers with Tyranids. Or rather, they use the same Ally setup as Tryanids.

Initial FAQ that came out today says they're Allies of Convenience with Tyranids... NOT Battle Brothers.

True, and it has raised a lot of comments considering how it was originally introduced.

I can say this much. If this stays, I'm going back to Eldar for my groups next Campaign. Was going to do Tyranid/Cultists but not anymore.

Ok, either way we can even forget the nids with WZ Damocles: Mont'ka; FSE are now just a detachment type for Tau, meaning Tau faction battle brothers are only Tau Faction.

No matter how you look at it the new matrix lists every faction as battle brothers with themselves, and most are only battle brothers with themselves.

Clearly one of the 2 is wrong; but is it the reprinted text, or the new matrix?

Personally I believe it to be the new matrix as it is something that was actually changed.

Edit for clarity: by detachment type for tau, I mean that they are a Tau Faction, "farsight enclaves detachment" no matter which other type of detachment(formation, CAD, AD, their special detachment of formations and units that must be a "FSE detachment ")
