I need to fix up a broken pole on some of my miniatures. I was wondering what the best technique was for this - I have to do this with both metal and plastic models - I was going to just use superglue but was wondering if there were ways of making the join stronger (greenstuff?)? Is there a way to pin them together (it appears to be much too fine for this but was wondering if there was an alternative technique).

Drill pole out of the hand of the mini and replace the entire shaft with a piece of brass rod.
Or find brass rod just large enough for the shaft to fit into and make a splint of sorts.

How thick are the bits? GW styled comically thick or smaller than 1mm?
I've drilled out spearshafts AND reattached spearheads (as well as broken shafts) - it can be done, it just takes a very steady set of hands and lots of practice.
The alternate is to remove the remainder of the spearshaft/pole and replace the entire shaft with a piece of metal rod (brass rod comes in several thicknesses and can be cut with decent pliers).
You can often drill out the banner top/spearheads to fit back on.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

As said, if its too small for normal pinning tecniques then simply replace the entire pole with a brass rod.
I've had to do that with several models now and it's by far the better method of the 2.

I have a .6mm drill bit and .6mm tailor pins that I use sometimes for pinning really small bits. It is possible, but difficult and can often go wrong. If you go this route, take your time and don't apply too much pressure, and be sure to mark the center of where you want the hole with a pin so there's a small "starter hole" for the drill bit.
As others are saying, It's often easier to replace the whole shaft though. If it's 1mm you can use a simple paper clip, if it's 1.5mm or 2mm or more you can get metal rods and tubes of the appropriate size. Detail can be sculpted back with greenstuff if needed.

I've used thin wire through the hand & then a brass rod over each end leaving a bit of the thin wire poking out at each end to attach the spear tip & butt end. A bit more complex but you end up with a really good result.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

You can get drill bits down to less than 0.5mm, I think my smallest is 0.4 if I recall, you have to be very careful using it because they're easy to snap. Then I have some 0.38mm steel wire (bought it from my hobby shop for a couple of bucks for a length longer than I'll ever use in my lifetime labelled "music wire", piano wire I guess).
It's nice if you can replace the whole shaft with brass rod, but I find drilling hands and reattaching spear heads to be a difficult task, hard to get things lined up at the end.
