Got told it was 4th edition codex. My brothers friend quickly showed it to me and it was just glorious.

Not only talking rules and stuff like that, but the book art and fluff was pretty darn awesome too.

25pts Ogryns, YES PLEASE! 5pts power weapons? YES PLEASE. So much good stuff.

What you guys think?

Those points costs have changed since, and cannot be compared to 7th ed codexes.
Do the same for any old codex, and certain units will scream "Broken!" at you like those did.

The 3rd ed codex had great fluff, but I've only been playing guard since 5th and I much preferred them in 5th. Marbo, come back to us!

At the same time, the compulsory infantry platoon which can't 'blob up', tanks which cost 20-30 points more, no access to orders.....you win some, you lose some.

The art was good. I do like the doctrines - it's the same reason I like the forgeworld 'not guard' lists - the Death Korps and Elysian Drop Troops.

Remember, at the time these power weapons were...

Deadlier: S User- ap2
Hidden: 4th ed rules meant you could keep your unit leaders alive longer unless they were singled out by a unit taking more blows/shots than they had models.

...and thus considerably BETTER than modern power weapons.

GW at the time recognized that weaker characters should pay less for their combat upgrades in a design philosophy that came directly from Chaos 3.5.
SM Captains with Terminator armour (who can tank battlecannon shells on ther way to melee) should not be paying the same amount as Astra Militarum squad leaders (who die to stray boltpistol rounds) for their swords.

Note the lack of Leman Russ squadrons and the presence of doctrines- they game was still about infantry and they had rules to personalise them.

The best quality of codex books I've seen was 2nd. Heaps of fluff, excellent descriptions, loads of rules, background, painting, organization etc.

The IG isn't super phenomenal in 2nd but it's pretty darn good.

The 3.5E codex was awesome in its fluff an options.

Its points costs and competitivenes...not so much, IG was absolute garbage sadly during those years between outrageous prices for stuff in the IG codex and the core rules. Sure, 5pt power weapons were cool. Chimeras that were almost 100pts after kit were not, likewise ~100pt basic infantry squads after kit.

The 5E IG codex was probably the height of competitiveness and brought back lots of cool old stuff and lots of formerly FW only stuff. The 6E codex was a very lame phones in copypaste job.

Oh yeah. That's the codex I'm using right now as well

Can't beat 2nd ed codexes in terms of character.

That had a lot to do with the Vehicle- and specifically transport- oriented 5th edition of the rules. Mech vet lists were all the rage. Not that I'm complaining, it's the only time in recent memory Guard were at all competitive.

Aye, it did, but they also did a lot of enhancements and cost cutting in the codex itself too. HH tanks getting Fast and no longer having to roll to hit, Lumbering Behemoth, infantry squads that cost 60-70pts after kit instead of 90-120, Orders, etc. Not a perfect codex at all, but probably the best overall.

Not that I'm disagreeing with anything you said. It's pretty spot on to my thoughts as well. I remember getting very concerned when I heard the author of the 5th Ed say that he was a self proclaimed "tread-head" as I played an infantry centric army. Boy was I relieved when it actually came out

Each codex needs to be taken into context with the edition it's most associated with (I say this because the Ork one is technically a 4th ed codex, but it might as well be a 5th ed one considering when it came out and which meta it dominated).

Imo the best one for IG was the 5th one, part because it's when they got the valk and because vehicles in general were boss in 5th edition.

Given that GW says you can play what you want, why aren't the rest of you playing the 5E Codex?

Because despite what GW's rulebook says, events, stores, and clubs often have houserules to the contrary, GW stores and events included, in addition to deeply rooted social conventions regarding pickup play. If it were just close pals playing in the kitchen, that'd be one thing, but for people who get their games from leagues and events or pickup play at stores and clubs, playing with an older book is an issue.

It shouldn't be. It's a legal Codex, and short of an event or store rule to the contrary, there shouldn't be any obligation to play the newest Codex. GW says to play whatever you like, and none of the old Codices are going to be format-breaking.

I say, just play 5E and let the chips fall where they may.

If someone would be so unsporting at a "fun" game as to disallow your IG the use of the 5E Codex, then just Unleash Titans and have at him...

I fully agree that it wouldnt hurt anything really, but there are rules in a lot of stores/events/clubs about it (again, even...actually, *especially* at GW stores). For playing with pals its not an issue, but it can be very awkward in pickup games...and I own no Titans

No Titans? The Knights are 1-man crewed vehicles, just like Sentinels. You should buy IKR and get TWO. That'll show 'em!

If an IG player wanted to combine the best rules from both the 5th codex and the newer one I would have no problem with it since it's not like IG is some scary top tier codex.

My favorite thing about the previous IG codexes was probably Creed's entry in the 3rd(?) ed coded where fielding him allowed you to choose the game type. No rolling for it, no debate. You. Choose.

Frankly that is the sort of thing that I would expect to see on a Tzeentchian named character, not something like what had it.

I would say 4th or 5th and that's mainly because of the way vehicles worked in those editions.

Imo guard are meant to be the mech/tank army, with russes and chimeras being the bread and butter of the guard armies, and the guardsmen being the seasoning.

Tanks where very strong in 4 and 5 but it also made transports over powered as wel, which is probably the main reason vehicles got nerfed so bad now. Right now vehicle rules are so bad, it cripples the guard armies forces making them very weak/sub par to other factions ie tau, which does everything guard was meant to do, but better

To many unpainted models to count.

5th was primarily where tanks were good, tanks were awful on 4th unless they were skimmers, and nonskimmer transports were completely nonfunctional. A single penetrating hit on a transport forced immediate disembarkation, and then a pinning test, while a losing a transport forced wounds and autopinning...which Skimmers could basically ignore. Non skimmer tanks were killed on a penning 4+ (and stunned in additiom to any other non kill result like losing a wealon) and a glancing 6.
