Been on/off interested getting into infinity for a year or so now, with my probable choice being combined army. Really like the look at most of the models in the new Onyx box that's come out. Done a bit of reading and looks like it's a hard hitting but small force for the points, but if I go into it as my first force would it be a steeper learning curve than most choices?

Gathering the Informations.

It will really only be a steeper learning curve because of the fact that it is a Sectorial force, meaning Link Teams and the like.

You'll be just fine picking it up, just don't run Link Teams to start with.

Sectorials tend to have a smaller learning curve than generic force. You'll be limited in your selection and you'll quickly notice just what the designer wanted for you to play. Curve of the game and game's many different interactions is entirely different category.

Since the new HS rules are out Fireteams are much easier to play than before. And, like Knight said before, Sectorials are somehow easier to manage due to the reduced amount of units available.

As an example, this would be a nice Starting list, all you need is the Onyx/CA Starter Box (not the big pack which is still a good choice if you want to start big) and the CA support pack (inevitable buy TBH).

The Nexus can be easily proxied by the Maakrep Tracker and you'll have the full advantage of the Fireteam: Core also some Specialists with the Nexus Hacker and the Unidron FO
