I have a mid-size 40k event coming up next weekend. I've been stalling in hopes a final version would be published, but feel that I basically need to put out a statement tomorrow (1 week out) about how we're treating the GW FAQs. I know there's a player affected by the apothecary ruling, another the Iron Hands vehicles, another the Dreadnough attacks, etc.

My current plan is to adopt everything except:

- Drop Pod doors will continue to play as previous convention: They're not part of the model if open, block LOS if closed, etc. Treating open doors as part of the model just seems like crazy talk given the footprint.

- Walls being impassable will be clarified or changed (depending on how you look at it) to be about actual wall pieces, not ruin walls. Taking it otherwise would really impair mobility on many of our tables and be a huge change to how everybody plays the game.

On the flip side though, I'm inclined to adopt the additional Dreadnought attacks for the non-generic codexes.

I have not made time yet to go through the FAQs in fine detail (in part because of the dumb way they were published, as Facebook images; and yes, I know there are compilations around). Are there any other major landmines and contentious issues in there besides those above that I should be aware of if I otherwise just adopt them whole? This is a very casual and narrative oriented event, not a tournament or pure competition.

Thx

Sounds about right to me. What about terminator costs and scout stats for BAs?

I think you will be okay as long you declare if they are in or out, in their entirity. An item by item approach sounds difficult for players to kep track of.

The two cited items sound good enough to go on

Its your tourny, play it how you like it

However personally.

Drop pods: please dont use the GW ruling its terrible
Ruin walls: I personally like people having to switch up play styles and actually using the terrain in a more logical sense. if there are windows you should be able to jump through. if there is a chest high wall you can jump over it totally. if you are on the first floor of a 3 story ruin and its a solid wall, i have no idea how a truck is going through it.
Grenades: it honestly only hurts wychis more than anything.

Looking forward to Libertyhammer! Keep in mind that the Apothecary question in the photo is a typo that they corrected in the comments:

Hey Folks,
Whoops, we got one wrong there.
For the last question on this page, the answer should be 'No'.

Please refrain from cutting all the arms off your Apothecaries, they need them for their nartheciums.

Q: Is it possible for an Apothecary to carry items from the Special Weapons and/or Melee Weapons lists (e.g. by a Veteran purchasing upgrades, and being subsequently upgraded to an Apothecary)?
A: No.

We can't update the image without taking all the FAQs down, sorry.
When the FAQ is finalised and made into a PDF, it will be amended.
At this point, this is only a draft for feedback.

For now if I were running the event, I would ignore the FAQ until it gets released in a more official capacity. There are several answers that are unclear, some that are confusing because they directly contradict the rules without an explanation, some that contradict other FAQ answers, and some that are just silly.

Wait for the actual not-rough-draft FAQ. Tell your players that this isn't your last event ever and there will be plenty of time to play with the FAQ after it's legit.

Make your own FAQ (possibly with a lot of cut and pasting) to supersede anything official.

This will help you when it come to rule judgements!

Include a copy in your info pack, and perhaps leave print outs on each table for quick reference.

Thanks everybody for the comments so far. Especially thanks to Pythius for pointing out that reversal on the Apothecaries, and doubly excited you'll be joining us!

The Apothecaries bit is troubling though. I had not realized they had made at least that one tweak already in comments. To me that creates a ton of additional confusion around these FAQs, the state of which was already very confusing even before the few internal contradictions they have.

Long story short, earlier this year our club had a whole huge debate specifically about the Apothecaries because one player wanted to follow ITC and put special weapons on his guy in a new army, while the other event leads & I had ruled in our club FAQ that RAW that wasn't justifiable---following exactly the same logic, you could give a bike captain Terminator armor, which is clearly not intended. With the FAQs this came up again, and that player was dead sure this vindicated his position and belief that permitting special weapons were the intent. But apparently not. Fortunately that player is pretty sharp, and had magnetized the Apothecary in anticipation of these difficulties continuing!

In any event, I'm going to think about it a bit more overnight, but now I'm leaning toward changing course and ignoring these FAQs until they're final.

Thx again!

The Dreadnought query has now become an official GW Errata - so all Space marine Dreadnoughts from all Codexes now get the extra 2 attacks.

So that one is fine.

Agree about the others - the Drop Pod one is soooo stupid and open to so much abuse (Glue one door shut and the leave the other 3 open and then position so the one door blocks LoS for example....)

Come up with your own FAQ. Adapt from ITC or Nova or Adepticon or ETC. Copy/paste as much or as little as you want from GW FAQ.

Just an FYI about the FAQ from GW....they have said the FAQ is pretty much official but they are looking at responses for wording issues before official posting. ATC event had asked them directly and this was their response so you can pretty much take it and run with it.

I do what the voices in my wifes head say...
