I'm not sure why this is even a question. Can't they eat whatever they want?

I would think they would actually. They are living beings and as such they need to consume something for their bodies to use as energy so that their body can function. Someone smarter than I could explain it in a much more intelligent way I am sure, but I know that living beings need some form of sustenance to survive. I cant think of any exception to that basic rule. Even mighty space marines in 40k are noted to eat as they need to. They are super humans, but still humans. Chaos Space Marines surely have to eat as well to survive even if the warp distorts reality their own bodies surely are at least somewhat bound by physics.

As for what they eat I would think it would be whatever they wanted.

In fantasy, chaos warriors did not need to eat or drink, but would be sustained off the chaos they were immersed in. Perhaps the same for some of the more potent marines?

In Black Crusade (the 'Chaos Marine' RPG) one of the mutations you could acquire was "warp-eater", which essentially removed the need to eat; you were instead sustained by something else (your choice based off guidance depending on your alignment, broadly murder, suffering, sorcery, etc).

That was not common, though, and 90% of even 'named heretics' need to eat. Broadly speaking, chaos marines are just like marines - they eat the same stuff as humans, but they need a lot of it. An astartes can go for a lot longer without food than a normal human (especially in their armour, which contains nutrient systems that pump stuff directly into the blood vessels), but when they can eat, they eat a lot - as you might imagine, an eight foot tall human with muscles three to four times as powerful per pound, burns a lot of calories per day in combat.

There's a reason for the 'eat the whole hog, drink the whole keg' mentality of space wolves, and it's not just to amp up the 'space viking' aesthetic. That's a normal meal to them.

Rest. There diet can be almost any thing at end of day.

Space marines can eat materials undigestable to regular humans. Leaves, bark, most organic matter is fair game. Acid spit and reinforced teeth help but their digestive system is engineered to be super adaptable.

In the Eye, a marine would eat whatever tainted creatures roam the daemon worlds. Remember that chaos is not a destroyer of life- the servants themselves tend to kill and cast down enemy civilisations and worlds but chaos itself is mutation and life.

On campaign/crusade, CSM will have a strict 'we do not sow' policy and will pay the 'iron price' by raiding Imperial worlds/ convoys for anything they need.

Even so- during the Sabbat worlds crusade the arch enemy forces used great warp beasts with endpoints on different worlds as Portal Guns to drain lakes and seas and promethium reservoirs- sucking frontline worlds dry and throwing the goods out where the mortal servants of chaos need - presumably dark forge worlds and chaos mustering worlds.

Possessed marines may be sustained by the daemonic energies of their symbiotes but they'll probably need to feed when not in action.

Looking at Eternal Hunt's cool berzerker on Juggernaut I had an idea for a pack of Berzerkers on Juggernauts, laden with saddlebags and provisions.
The Juggers would have grown power feeds plugging into armour of the Marine, the daemon bleeding off its energy to keep the Marine topped up. In return, the Marine guides the Jugger to hunts and battles where the slaughter strengthens the daemon.

In the eye they hunt big game for sustenance and raid settlements for khorne (and supplies) attacking other warbands as the opportunity permits. They ride through warpgates to other worlds and breach reality when the daemons become strong enough, emerging on worlds outside the eye to kill as long as there is killing to sustain the Juggernauts.

Chaos Undivided: Whatever food is available. Human flesh included.

Tzeentchian and Slaaneshi Marines: Exotic and expensive delicacies.

Khornate Marines: Meat. Freshly slaughtered. Probably raw.

Nurgle Marines: I'm assuming they don't feel hunger, so they don't eat. Maybe they absorb nutrients from maggots and flies that infest them.

probably a lot of stolen imperial ration bars in the field orwhateverequivilen they have. remember that chaos worlds exist where they have taken over, I doubt it just means they kill off the populations they just serve that chaios god and feed their armies so basically normal food cultivated on worlds or gained in raids

I imagine the ones that aren't mutated beyond the need for food eat whatever. I imagine human/xeno flesh isn't beyond the realm of possibility. But the majority of them probably don't even need food or drink (Death Guard, World Eaters, and Iron Warriors all have their own individual reasons). I imagine they may keep some form of Human cattle for ritual feasting and blood rituals and stuff. (Those pools of blood everywhere in the background of CSM artwork have to come from somewhere)

Space Marine armour recycles waste into a paste which is edible. It possibly still works for Chaos marines.

Being proprieters of moustache twirling villainy, every meal a chaos marine eats has to be accompanied by fava beans and a nice chianti.
