I bought betrayal at Calth, and the combat blades that are meant to be put on the marines side don't have rules as far as I can tell. Could I count them as a chain sword or even a power sword(providing I painted and modeled them to match?)

They are nice bits, and could be used to represent a lot of things. From a WYSWYG perspective, it might be anything from a CC weapon to a power sword. What model is it on and what points did you spend for it?

In 30k, there are more options for marines, so it has a bit more meaning there. 40k is mostly just for looks.

Chain swords are far bigger in size and power weapons are generally never in a sheath.

The ones in the set are generally basic CC weapons designed to give an additional attack with the pistol.

I'd generally have no issue with a power sword though as it can be turned off and put away and for all purposes it would look near on the same.
The CC blades as a tad on the small side though.

I was thinking for a Black Templar Initiate squad, giving them as chainswords crunch wise, and just having them be something else I make up. Or even as just short power swords for my chapter, I would pay full price for them, I just wanted to see if you thought that was okay to use them.

The Sternguard kit conspicuously comes with a sheathed power sword.

I'm personally going to use them for carcharodon tactical squads. They can buy additional ccw for 1ppm and tend to have older marks of power armour.

I was thinking I could paint them to look like open blades, and maybe cut the sheath buckles and paint them to look like decoration or like, power cables or something. I could even paint them to look like they have little teeth, for a miniature chainsword or something. Basically just want to know if they would be passable after painting as the rules, or do you think people would have issues with them as such?

Really there's no difference rules wise between a chainsword and a combat blade/generic ccw anyway. So not too much to worry about there and you can always paint your power sword ones with a faint blue glow running along the centre as though it's in low power mode but ready to spring to life at a moments notice.

Awesome, thank you, I think I might even run them in a vanguard squad in my cad, to put these boys to work.

I actually use some of the older combat blades as bayonets or decor.

This was a lot clearer in older days when it was explicit that a lot of the stuff on the sprues were decorations only, whereas nowadays they try to cram so many options onto a sprue that it's actually jarring to see something that would just be decor.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.

Legion Tactical Squads come with a bolt guns and bolt pistol, and can buy an additional close combat weapon. Legion Veteran Squads come with that additional close combat weapon as standard. That's what all those swords are for.
