Hello gals and gents.

So my brother from out west gave me a bunch of shirts because I always wore cartoon animal ext. shirts, so when he sees a shirt that has one he buys it. Then when he comes for his summer visit he brings them all.

Now I wore this shirt all day because it is funny and awesom and reminds me of planet of the apes.

Well about 20 minutes ago a black friend of mine laughed and laughed then said thats the most racist shirt of black americans I ever seen. You may get shot for it and kept laughing.

Well after about 5 minutes of arguing suttles we agreed we are both right lol. Anyway what does the majourity think.

Exceptionally racist. Like it shows a side of you that makes me very uncomfortable levels.

And it "reminds (you) of planet of the apes"? Seriously? SERIOUSLY? I don't buy that crap for a second, it is the kinds of things that middle schoolers would think up as a reason to be offensive.

Yeah, don't wear that.

That this is a question some can ask unironically is why we can't have nice things.

I googled the guy all his art is animals breaking things a bear attacking cops and a bear that raped a guy..... He is a skateboarder guy.

My first reaction was to think of Planet of the Apes too.

But yes, in light of current events, it can reasonably be perceived as racist.

I do not think it was ment to be racist, I was woried that it was like a kk artist, thankfully it is a animal actavist. Makes me feel alot better about owning it.

it's not racist per se. you need a racist point of view to perceive it as racist: if you think that only black people riot and damage police cars, then it's not the tshirt, it's YOU.
If your thoughts are immediately associating riot/chimp to black people...well, welcome to the party: you are a racist (altough you might act and believe that you are not)
To me it's a right winged tshirt that says "All those who revolt and assault cops are chimps"
Black or whites is not important.

I'd err on the side of caution and just keep it in the drawer for another day, as cool as it is, in light of current US events, it's probably not the wisest move to wear it.

It sucks not to get to wear stuff because of perception, but thems the breaks.

But...
Normally it would probably have made me think about Planet of the Apes too, but given recent events it made me think of something racist first.
So given what has been going on in the US recently (the whole black people vs police thing) I can see how some people could very easily construct it as racist and be offended by it (and by some people, I mean virtually everyone). I would not wear it, if I were you.

On the other hand, it just dawned on me that this shirt might say more about the people seeing it as racist than about the person wearing the shirt. After all, there is nothing racist about a shirt with monkeys. It is the people who think: Monkeys = black people who are the racists! (guess that means I am a racist too then? )
Still, I wouldn't wear it, even if only to avoid potential trouble.

Looking at the rest of his art, I think I go with LordofHats.

Understand that in the US, monkeys and chimpanzees especially (as an image and a word) have long been used as a epithet for people of African descent. There are a number of racist terms, jokes, stories, and other such things that I probably can't post here without violating the rules. It's part of our culture, and I imagine Americans will perceive this differently from people elsewhere in the world.

Saying 'I like Planet of the apes' is like when someone walks around with the confederate flag on and says 'I really like civil war reenactments'.

No one will believe you... and 99% of the time, the second the 'crowd' is 'safe' that person begins dropping n-bombs.

If someone wore that and said 'I am a planet of the apes fan' I would put on my skepticals, probably avoid interacting further interaction with that person under the presumption they are a bigot.

The 'planet of the apes' was a big racist meme around the 2015 Baltimore riots... so if you really are enthusiastic about that franchise, be prepared it was used as general hate fodder for a while in the recent past. Just go google youtube for "Baltimore planet of the apes" and see who you are associating with when you wear such a shirt.

It's offensive towards Primates.. ;p

I wouldn't find it racist, and I also knew it was from planet of the apes.
