This recently has been bothering me a lot on what people consider OK for swaps and conversions, including when I eventually play in a tournament and what is allowed. To give some background, I haven't played for long and have played Tau as WYSIWYG. I'm now interested in doing some conversions/kitbash for Skitarii and Chaos Demons (specifically Slaanesh) because I just hate the look of some models or prefer different heads. What is the general consensus of what is allowed for play in a tournament?

For Skitarii, I just hate the Vanguard Cylon-like heads compared to the Rangers hood/goggles/respirator (sort of my working theme). Would it be OK to use the other heads intended for another unit? Concerned about confusion of units.

For Chaos Demons, I'm not really digging the Demonette double hand claws and their ugly face/heads. It just makes no sense to me in the lore, they're supposed to seduce you with their sinfully looking face and caress you with their lobster hands?!? I want to use a box of Preying Mantis from Raging Heroes Miniatures and maybe kitbash them with the regular Demonettes. I'm hesitant to believe a TO would allow using Preying Mantis to "counts-as" with no changes. Honestly, I think it's cheap but the Preying Mantis looks better in every way lol. How much of a conversion would I need, would I still need both of those lobster hand weapons?

For tournament play, as long as everything is WYSIWYG I don't think aesthetic changes would matter so much.

The Preying Mantis models are specifically made to stand in for Daemonettes, to the point where they're still identifiable as Daemonettes. As long as your store doesn't require models to be all GW parts (as official GW stores would) you're good. As for the headswaps on the Skitarii guys, I doubt anyone would care. The long rifles are the identifiable part of the other Skitarii guys.

It's pretty clear that the way you're mentioning is correct. Rangers are supposed to be the ones with the hoods, and the other heads are Vanguard... but it doesn't say that anywhere. It's not a stated rule. I can't imagine a single person that would say anything about you using a different head. You don't even identify the rangers by their hoods, you identify them by their frickin' muskets. If someone confuses a ranger unit for a Vanguard unit when they're carrying long sticks rather than a short grease gun, that's seriously on them. (same goes the other way around)

As long as units are WYSIWIG and you identify changes prior to the commencement of the game, I don't see any issue with it.
