Truly the end times are upon us:
Brexit, Trump running for president, and now this
As a neutral
I was wondering what my fellow dakka members think of this.
Could be a solid appointment or another clustergak from the FA...
Only time will tell...

I can't see England winning in 2018, but at least they'll be organised and have a game plan.
Personally, I think England missed a trick a few years back when 'arry lost out, but it should make world cup qualification interesting.

Well at least England will avoid relegation xD
England teams aren't great- and it's not entirely the managers fault. Sometimes it feels like a large proportion of players just play for money and not for the badge.
There's also the issue with Russia bribing for 2018 (and Qatar 2022), violence, etc. I was buzzing for Euro 2016 because I thought England would do well. Now? I can't seem to muster enough enthusiasm to really care for international football.
Just heard that Arsene Wenger was the number one candidate for the job and he turned it down. A lot of Arsenal fans are going to be extremely angry if he doesn't start doing some transfer business...

taken in isolation he's not necessarily a bad choice,
but I think most of his skills are in man management of the lower skill level players to instil team spirit and a maximum effort attitude
those may well not gel with the higher skill players that end up in an England squad (they do have them even if they don't seem to use them when playing for England), and as with all England managers he's only going to have the odd few days with the players not the months and months of constant contact he's used to
as the FA is supposed to be involved in fairly administering the game according to the rules, 'tapping up' Big Sam while he was in contract to Sunderland seems pretty reprehensible

Big Sam is the nickname of Sam Allardyce, an English soccer manager. Due to his style of management and play, you either love him or hate him. There is no middle ground.
His tactics and thinking are seen as old fashioned by many, and unlikely to scare England's traditional football rival - Germany. Automatically Appended Next Post:

Arsenal fans are always angry. Wenger would have been an inspired choice, but the FA can't twiddle their thumbs for a year, and any interim manager i.e Southgate, would have been a lame duck from day 1.
It had to be Big Sam or Steve Bruce.

His managerial record whilst "good for man management" does not inspire an ounce of confidence in taking a dissparite and relatively inexperienced squad to any sort of glory - the English FA grasping blindly once again for someone who is "a bot of a geezer, well liked and popular".
Much and all as a Iike the english players and their effort, this wont go anyhere. Quote me in 2018/2020 right here

I reckon he should start by pick players that want it the most and will play as a good team/group. That could be all Championship for all i care as the so called Stars have been focused on other things for the last decade.
It would get the fan base fired up again (no need for that stupid band) and the players would start to focus back on country rather than club. Englands fan base is always fired up - he dosent need to do that 0_o
He needs to find a system and players that fit it and manage them.
He seems to be a good man-manager but Im seriosly wary of his tactics and overall strategy. Records speak for him - I mean the WC or EC isnt = "a decent to run in the FA cup".

Isn't that sort of what they've done with the German national team?? I recall seeing one of those mini documentaries some time back, that the manager is out front with his ideals, and if players don't conform to them, they're gone. The thing with Germany has been though, through that management, the best and brightest of that nation have bought into it and the results are generally pretty good. (I'd reckon it's something similar to the All Blacks in rugby)

I tend to agree. Pick a team that is difficult to beat, make it awkward. Fill that team with players who are hungry. Be it from the Premier League or lower division sides.

I can never understand why the Manager always gets the blame for the England teams dire performances. At the end of the day it's the players on the field that have to do the job. They are supposed to (well they actually do at club level) have the skills to be able to play well.
As somebody who is on the side-lines he should good at seeing the big picture during the game and passing that on to the players. At this level of playing, motivation is a red herring. They are top flight players who are supposed to be good at what they do. They shouldn't need to be 'motivated' by anybody else, wearing the shirt should be motivation enough. You should be able to give the job to a Sunday League manager and not see that much of a drop in the overall performance. You could even argue that you shouldn't even see a change then as the players are of such a high level that they can sort the game out themselves.

Wenger would have been a terrible choice. Tactically he is a poor manager. His game plan is Plan A for 90 minutes.
On the plus side, he has a long history of working with sub-par players due to showing excessive loyalty to ones that aren't up to it.

I was less than impressed by the "he plays where he wants" comments from BS after the game. Rooney needs to rein his ego in or get comfy on the bench.

They were very poor, unfortunately. Rooney is way past his best, and the comments from SA that he plays where he wants to is bizarre because how can you have a game plan when one player can do what he wants, although maybe he'll play in goal next time as at least he will be able to kick the ball out better. We only improved when their player decided that it was obviously in Slovakia's best interest by doing his best to get sent off (I guess there was something on TV he wanted to watch). However we still huffed and puffed and didn't really blow the house down.
However the one thing worse than the game was the post match review by ITV which came down Ian Wright saying how good Lallana was for kicking the ball as hard as possible at the goal from 3 yards out. Lee Dixon saying the disallowed goal was definitely a goal until they showed a replay showing that it definitely came off the boot of one of our players and commenting that he had only just seen that. Yet everyone else in the world had seen it that it wasn't, raising questions whether Lee Dixon had actually been watching the game (or whether he had been cutting his toenails or something). And finally we had the how good England were in the second half after Slovakia lost a player because they were making better use of the space
