Recently I've stopped buying 40k models, even used, and have been looking into a new hobby game to enjoy. My SO and I were looking over my models and Ive spent close to 1000 dollars on warhammer in my ten years (seems cheap when spread out, but the last 600 dollars was in the last year alone!). My SO doesn't really mind at all, which is nice, but i still feel like I've spent WAY too much on the hobby to date.

Well then everyone, how much have you spent, and how does your SO/family feel about it?

Too much. I'm hoping to get £750 for my entire collection and that's probably not even half of RRP.

I honestly don't know My gut feeling would be ~800.
But I know that this is wrong since I added together the cost of just a simple 2k ork army (grossing over 1000$). And I own more then double of that on orks alone. So the total sum of my old Wfb armies + my multiple 40k armies over the years would be an embarrassing sum of money.

I've been playing since 2008. Not a long time compared to most here, but I have a pretty sizable army. Just counting my superheavy vehicles: Baneblade, Stormlord, Stompa, and Warhound Titan (with 2 weapons), that's $850 in today's dollars.

I passed the $2000 mark a LONG time ago...

Been collecting 40K since RT days, and have full armies for Space Marines (2 companies worth), Orks, Eldar (loaner army for my brother), CSM, Tau, Tyranids, Imperial Guard and even once had a squat army. I also have a few miscellaneous items - a Knight, a few squads of Grey Knight (and a Dreadknight).

Now, ask me what all I've played with out of that, and it'd be a mere fraction...

It never ends well

I dread to think.
I collected and played for 4ish years when I was younger and sold my then armies ON THE CHEAP for over £500
...and that was in 2003
and in the past year i have amassed a space marine army of just over 2500 points... I don't even want to know what my total spend comes to!

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Although I have a sizeable collection of CSM, daemons, space marines, imperial guard and orks, I don't believe I have spent much more than £300. Early on in my 40k career I managed to get some very good deals on job lots of models. From memory I believe I got: 2 citadel cases full of CSM for £20, a large well painted space marine army for £60, a case filled with imperial guard for £20 and a large ork army for £15.

I have been a little more generous with my more recent perchases but I am still stingy.

So much for that whole "Most plays buy 1 1500 point list and no more" nonsense...

I own more factions then I don't, and it would take me a while to detail my collection. Up until 5th I owned all the books as well, lately I just DL everything but the main rulebook.

Having played from around 1994-2004 and then recently investing in a 2nd edition army, easily 2K+ over the entirety of my life.

Not too much more, but $2500-3000 if I had to guess - not including supplies required to play GW games (ie. paints, brushes, etc.). But models/books and property of GW (second hand or otherwise).

You need to skew those numbers a bit as I'm sure most people have easily spent over $2000+ dollars on this crap.

Honestly over 20 years I didn't keep track but probably in the thousands of pounds, so easily over 3k in dollars.

Should probably change the poll numbers since 2K is probably more on the low-end.

I'm easily around the 6-7k mark which is pretty cheap considering I've been collecting since 2nd edition.

I'd say that over the last 8 years, I've easily spent $10,000 on 40k, plus a bit of Fantasy. But less than 1/3 of that has been out of my pocket.

Initially I couldn't really afford much, so I started doing conversions using cheaper kits. I got good at it and started painting for other players. I could make a $600 army out of $300 of models just by making the most out of existing plastic kits + sculpting, etc.

Over the years, I've "flipped" armies a few times: using the paint commission money to buy an army, play it for a bit, then sell it fully painted, usually for close to it's value. Part of that money would go into my pocket, some would go towards hobby supplies and more minis.

Way, way , way above 2k. Tried calculating it lately (based on 1993 prices et al) and just gave up.
Suffice to say, it came close to a high end Car.
Oh well - years of enjoyment at least without the road tax

Anyone got GW stock options?

It's pure inertia at this point. GW has gakked on my army for two editions now.

Between 1 and 2k.

My wife is pretty cool with it. I only allocate $80 a month to frivolities, so if some of that goes to wargaming it isn't a huge deal. If she ever looks at me askance I ask her to ask her coworkers what their husbands spend on their hobbies. Fishing, sports, MMA, what have you. Once I frame it like that, she always lets it slide.

I lost count.... But I would like to imagine less than if I went pure GW.

plenty of non-GW deals (bought from friends and other players), scratch and conversions and so on. But for a hard number I couldn't give you one if I tried.

I had played it for about 25ish years when I stopped.

During that time, I spent about 2500 (AUD) on it.
Averaged out over that term, it's only about $100 a year (I spend more on public transport in a quarter).
The vast majority of the stuff, however, was purchased 2nd hand, for a fraction of what GW retail was here.

I know people who spent more than my total on only one army, then repeated it for ALL of the armies (as in they had ALL of the 40k armies) then did it again for WHFB.

Not enough.

I'm still short of my 9 lictor goal atm. My family tells me I have an unhealthy obsession that may impact my ability to communicate with others. I tell them to leave me alone with my plastic crack.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."
