The cap on the poll is $2k? That gets you 1 fairly big army plus the required books and modeling supplies. There's a handful of single models around that price. I would like to see a real poll with increments of 1000 from 1k to 10k.

I'm not sure if you saw the original comment, but it was essentially "Long term 40k players build 1 1500 point list and that's it", which seemed...weird to me. Most people I know own close to 3k for their main faction, if only because editions change what is strong, and possibly another faction. Usually marine and another faction.
Regardless, if it's anecdotal evidence versus anecdotal evidence, it's nice to point to a poll that's so overwhelming as this one is. Keep in mind, if you buy from GW, 2k is like...one large army with all the rules. If it's been two or three editions (and they've hard shorter life spans) you could easily own 200-400 in rules alone.

Personally, I don't think I've spent more than $1k over the past 20 years specifically on 40k. Wargaming in general? Yeah, several thousand. 40k specifically? I'd be guessing at around $1k, hard to say because it's been over such a long period. There was no original comment referring to long term players, unless you were referring to a different thread? Whoever said "Long term 40k players build a 1500 point list and that's it"? I don't think that's a commonly held belief by many people, if anyone. I think a lot of people only buy 1500pt armies.... I don't think those people are long term 40k players, unless you include people who are long term wargamers who play 40k infrequently over that long period of time. If I were to guess I'd say most people buy 1000-1500pt armies and quit before they ever finish painting them. But you're not going to capture those people in a poll like this.

Wow with my Ta'unar my Tau army is now officially over 3000 point army of apocalyptic doom folks.
I only own a single Riptide and Ghostkeel.
Man in the next two years I plan to buy.
2 Riptides
2 Ghostkeels
2 Barracuda
1 R'varna
3 XV9
1 Max unit of Kroot uncluding Krootox and Kroot HOudns
1 Vespid
1 Breacher Team
2 Devilfish
1 Skyray
1 Hammerhead
1 Ethereal
1 Crisis Suit Team
1 Stormsurge
1 Cadre Fireblade
3 Piranahs
Whew. That is a lot of painting folks. Plans might change in two years with inevitable Tau releases. The rumored FW superheavy tank.
Once I have all of that I'll move on to the Dark Kin project I have planned out. It will not be anywhere near as epic as my Tau.
Also I can get 27% off the insane Canadian prices and have plenty of time due to my situation.

My family thinks anything I do is stupid or they don't get it. So why does it matter how much I spend as long as I'm not sinking myself. It's not like there's a lot of hobbies I can do with my conditions and our city is getting real dangerous even less reason to try go out and do stuff. They gamble, smoke, drink, and piss away all their money on other people with nothing to show for it.
Thankfully being single has some perks. Time and money.

In almost two decades of collecting GW miniatures I have probably spent more then I care to add up. I have two Fantasy armies getting close to 5000 points and collected a few smaller armies before I stopped playing it back in 8th edition. In 40k I have about 8 armies that can break 3000 points and one that can easily break 6000. Then a few other failed armies that are around 1500 points each. I stopped playing 40k right after 5th edition. Now I'm on a 30k kick that will probably cost me around $1500 for my one army.
I'm still working on my 40k armies here and there. I still have a lot to paint and I still want more models for my homebrew chapter, Imperial Fists and my Imperial Guard. So my vote went into 2000+, although I have probably replaced the + with a 0 realistically.

Well i only just got into 40k (only a few months ago) but AFTER a close to a decade hiatus. Back then I played orks (don't quite remember how much I had, but when I stopped playing my older brother sold all of it for ~$500.
This year, when I got back into 40k I've only bought 50% of a DV box, a scout squad, a tac squad, and paints/brushes etc. So not much, but that's because I found my bro's old SM army that I used to play against which I am now using as part of my DA force.

Sorry, I should have made it clear it was a different thread. Someone was trying to prove that 40k was cheap to start by suggesting that players only own 1 1500 pt list while players of another game own the entire collection.

Assuming a rough number at ~1,000 AUD for an 1850 army for 40k, and about the same or more for a 2500 fantasy army, I'd be at ~10k AUD give or take a bit. Probably more give than take once you account for cases, paints, brushes, boards, tools, glue, rules, extra bits for conversions. Call it 12K and I reckon you'd be close. Another couple of grand on tournament travel/accomodation/entry. Yeah, about 3-4k a year seems about right so far.
Like everyone else said, having 2k as the higher end doesn't really reflect much of anything as anyone with multiple armies (which I'd wager is most people who've been playing for more than 2 years) will easily exceed that number. Hell, most people I know exceed that on a single army, though part of that is currency conversion and partly due tot he Australia Tax that we pay, but still...

should have had a 10k+ option.
7 thousand points of CSM, 10,000 of eldar including all FW Titans/Super heavies outside of the Phantom and Cobra. Been playing/collecting 20+ years now.
While expensive, i still consider it worth it, i love modelling and my game room would be full of Tamiya cars or WW2 tanks otherwise.

Been collecting since 3rd edition, so I hit $2000 a decade ago when I was a freshman in high school. Even before that, I used to bust my ass doing lawns at age 11/12 just to sink the money into new models! When the Tau arrived back in the day, I saved up hundreds of bucks just to splurge on a new force of awesome dirty robots. Such nostalgia thinking about those days. 2016 I've spent thousands already. Bought BaC, Silver Tower, several Start Collecting boxes, bunch of other stuff. I just did a big FW order that was over $400, bought myself a KoS and a Lord of Change! So much glory and model greatness in one box, it was just superb. Given that I've collected 10+ massive armies across the two main game systems, collect Inquisitor 54mm and BFG and have good-sized collections of them as well - I've probably got $20k+ worth of stuff easily - but that's spread across many years.

Put it this way - I've got 34 KR multi-cases containing just the armies that I have currently. That's almost £1000 just on cases. I've also spent more than that on scenery this year. That doesn't fly. Many people seem to either own multiple armies or change armies pretty frequently regardless of system. Of course, you don't need to do either to play in most systems. (one exception that springs to mind is malifaux where you build a list after you've seen the table, decided the objectives and you know what faction your opponent is playing - you need a good selection of models)

Regardless of it flying or not, that was the point of contention in another thread. It eventually got laid to rest since it was, frankly, an absurd position to take. We eventually looked at per model and starting costs to play a "standard" game for each system. It's over regardless, I don't want to turn this thread into a re-hash when the other thread was finally settled.

Not if he started pre 2004, prices weren't always insane, in 94 I got Bjorn the felhanded 10 grey hunters 10 blood claws and a long rang squad for like £60 which in 2nd ed was enough for 1k games, I still have them though they've had to be repainted as my skills improved.

Like I said, easily over $2000. Started at the very end of 2nd Ed. Everything painted, so more than money consider the time invested!
No regrets though, and I don't see myself ever selling an army. Such an investment is a labor of love, hence the abandonment of GW's rules.

I'll put it this way, I carry the maximum on my home owners insurance for "Collectibles" in case of natural disaster, theft, and fire and that is $30K. Any more and they told me I would have to have a separate policy.
I have been playing for 20 years, but have not added it up in years. For years I had friends that worked for GW and the US factory was near by, so we could get kilo size bags of metal for about $20, those were the days I have multiple armies for 40K (including Squats) and most of them are in the 6-10K mark, about multiple fantasy armies and most of them are in the 10K+ range. At the end of 7th my Dwarf army was around 20K. These days I don't buy anything from GW, I pick up things here and there on eBay and conventions. I have plenty to keep me busy without buying anything. I drew the line in the sand with 40K 6th. These days I paint every once in a while and I have a few friends that enjoy playing older editions. It is also a blast teaching the kids to play

$1500ish so far this year. The wife said I could buy a titan warlord so it might go up. All in all, 40k isn't an expensive hobby. If you look at the time that you put into assembling, painting, basing, terrain building, etc, it's worth every dime you spend on it. I certainly spend more time using my Space Marines then I do other hobby items I've paid much, much more money for. And for some odd reason i dont blink twice for dropping cash on new models but I cringe at wanting to buy a winch for the ATV.

I do restrict myself to what I can comfortably afford, so not on a tight month and more when I am a bit flush. I reckon I spend maybe £75 a month (about $100 unless the dear old pound has plunged again) on average, so over the years well over $2000 easily in the low thousands.
What does my SO other think? In all honesty we operate a simple policy. We know how much money comes in and we both spend sensibly and don't go OTT. If something expensive comes out or one of us wants it we discuss it and come to some agreement. I'm not sure how anyone could put up with a relationship in which their spending (so long as it was reasonable and not leading to debt/bankruptcy/stopping food going on the table/etc) was policed or determined by their SO, or if they were told what they could spend on (unless it was illegal, immoral, etc). You've got to be able to trust the other person in the relationship and allow them latitude to do as they see fit, so long as you still invest in the relationship. My wife earns a fair bit more than I do but she is happy to split the money up pretty equally as I did when she was in harder times.
