So after about 25 years I decided to have a go at painting 40K again. Used to as a kid but not since.
I decided to have another go to see if I could get my 7yo son off of the video games and TV. It works for small periods of time and I'll post his efforts too. He wanted to paint the 'Blue spacemen' ( Ultramarines ) and I had to paint 'baddies'
So I chose to paint Black Legion Chaos Marines. Still some work to do but thought I'd post my work so far.

Thanks, I know my skills are pretty rusty, but it's quite good fun getting back into it.
We had to order some new paints this week. Didn't have any red or yellow which my son wanted so ordered a few extras.

A good way to get your lad's time invested in a rewarding skill - hope you guys develop two amazing rival forces that'll eventually beat the gak out of eachother! Base those legionnaires and they'll look spectacular - its incredible how much basing can improving the aesthetic of a miniature.

Good stuff, time w/ kids is always time well spent, and if you can pull them away from the screens for a while to engage their imagination, all the better. Welcome back to the hobby, post/thread exalted!

Welcome back to the hobby. Black Legion are looking great, does it feel good to have a brush back in the hand?

Thanks for the responses, wasn't really expecting any
I've tried two base methods here. The first ( LHS model ) I base painted the model leadbelcher, then several washes of an Abbadon Black wash. I found Nuln Oil didn't really make it darker. The RHS model is just black. Still not sure which I like best, and I'm not convinced I haven't gone a bit OTT with the gold. But it's pretty fun getting back into this.
As for basing, yes I need to look into that, just haven't done any looking around to decide what to do with these.
I'll try and take some photos of my 7yo Sons building army of Ultramarines and post those too.

Welcome back to the hobby and to Dakka.
I like the flat black better for the legion. The washed silver feels too much like an Iron Warrior.
Gold looks good. They are supposed to be baroque.
I see a few mold lines, might want to be careful with them (my least favorite part of the hobby) and consider drilling our your gun barrels.
For basing, I assume you will want to pick a common theme for both you and your son. You should also paint up some spare helmets and shoulder pads to swap. One nice thing about having a dedicated opponent is the ability to put their shattered remenets on your bases.
I will be rooting for your son’s Ultras, sorry.

Good idea on painting a few extras for the bases. Will do that I think.
If you're rooting for the Ultras I might as well post his first efforts. 7yo and his first go. The based one was from his lesson at the GW.

Given basing one of the models a try. Very basic but I found a bag of bird grit under the stairs so thought I'd try it.
