So as an avid fan of 40k and of the DMC series, I've been musing over a 'what if' fight.
Each incarnation of his character has a different power scale, so I'm going to use the Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition variant. If Vergil fought against the Imperial guard, how many could he take out before finally being overwhelmed?

Do you mean basic putz guardsmen...or are we talking about tank divisions and massed heavy artillery barrages and Baneblades?

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

Who the F is this DMC series character? Without explaining its hard to predict a comparison. This is a 40k forum, so most of us know what a guardsmen is, but not the other.
Also which regiment of guardsmen are we talking about, which grade too(PDF, conscripts, guardsmen, veterans).
Are we comparing base on fluff, or RAW.

Vergil is a half human/demon hybrid and wields a demonic blade named Yamato, which (in the fluff) is capable of cutting through supposedly any substance. I think a video would serve his capabilities far better than my words can.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJNSJHQn02E
he would be fighting against everything the guard can use on-world... infantry, artillery, ground mech units, air mech units, etc. all ranging from rookie to veteran. the only thing he wouldnt be up against would be the warships in space.
he CAN be mortally wounded, though he has an exceptionally strong healing factor due to being part demon. around three times as powerful as wolverines

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Shouldn't a single Basilisk battery be able to sufficiently turn him into a puddle? Manticores? I mean, worse case Ontario, the Guard has to resort to dropping a Deathstrike, or just bringing more artillery/tanks.

well the correct answer in any of these vs threads would be who is writing it.
whom ever has the plot armor will always win

Ok, from the video he fights on par like a possessed and perhaps a primarch. So he would have stat like a 30k primarch or any of the assassins with some super weapon, but if he can bleed, he can be killed! Drown him in guardsmen, then fire S10 or D shots at him.

He'd have to have pretty strong plot armour to fight through a reasonable IG battlegroup/army.
But yeah, these do boil down to who do you want to win. I'm sure you could write something about this Vergil getting behind enemy lines and killing high command and throwing the Guard into disarray.
Or he's 40km from the nearest Guardsman in the open and in a pre-ranged arty bombardment coordinate.

Well, I should mention that I didn't ask who would win because I know the guard would win. My question was that how many could he bring down before being overwhelmed.

As far as I can tell he seems like a Solitaire.
And they are killable.
How many he he kills depends on how many he fights. The more they are the fewer he can kill.
