Afternoon Dakka,
I'm looking for some feedback on both the paint scheme and quality of this guy. He has a couple of different styles, but I'll just let you have a look. ~~Detailed questions at the end of the post.~~
Detailed questions here, cause I'm a noob.
1) Should the armour be a seperate colour, or be the same as the cloth?
2) Red or purple piping, or mix of the two?
3) Red or purple tiger stripes, or non at all?
4) Technique for painted darker skin tones? Currently black, with dark grey highlight and a black wash. Not much depth there. More highlights, start lighter and wash down?
5) Similar for the cloth, lacks depth.
Thanks in advance.

Looks good so far.
As far as your questions, most of them are your preference, if that is what you want your army to look like, you go with it. Myself i would go with a modern camouflage scheme, something I can look online to see what it looks like.
For yours, I would go with the purple as the tiger stripes, and the red for little details. Skin tone for the face looks good, you can go lighter as well, more browns to make each guy a bit different. I would wash the armor, and some light highlights to add detail to it, as well as the cloth for the legs.
Looks like a good start, this is the hardest part of modeling, trying to figure out something no one else has done, to give it your own personal touch.

Thanks.
I looked at cadians/catachan ect and non on them seemed to catch (heh) my eye. I want something that's not massively useful ("I demand it be shiny, not save the lives of my guardsmen!" - most 40k commanders) with some mechanicus reference in there. How else can i justify the later purchase of way way to many tanks.
I'll have a try with some very dark brown/black mixes for the skin, and throw some extra highlughting on the armour. Maybe get the boltgun out and add some scratches...

Personally, I would make the armour a darker grey for contrast against the cloth.
Also if you want to do dark/black skin tones don't paint it black, use some dark browns.

@ DarkKnight44 - Thanks for the tip about washes, had completely forgotten about those. The armour looks much better with that. My only problem is the cloth of the legs ended up looking too off white. I did the cloth in GW's sepia wash. Would i be better off using a more neutral wash like nuln?
@Tartarus the Abyss - I've had a crack using some browns (mixed with black to begin with) and a wash for the skin tone. It looks much better, though I dont think the picture below bring it out (it's now 3 am here, opps).
I've kept the armour the same colour, added in a wash, and gone with red edging. I've tried to clean up said highlighs and done one or two extra fine layers with some more orange-y colour. I havent added in the tiger stripes because on reflection they seem to make for an overly 'busy' model. Maybe if I can get my control up to scratch, and can do truely thin lines, that might work better. Now it feels way to bloby.
C&C as always, welcome and requested.

For the camo stripes remember that disruptive patterns are designed to break up outlines. Don't just paint stripes of colour in the middle of blank patches. The pattern needs to wrap over details and edges and probably needs to be denser than your prototypes.

That's a definite improvement! For darker skintones, I do Rhinox Hide, wash it with a brown wash, then highlight with Doombull Brown. It gives it some good depth and also brings out the detail in the face. I would also paint the canteen and knife sheath in the same black as the belt and spare magazine. You don't want those little baubles to stand out too much since they can distract from the figure instead of adding to it.

@ Flinty - I had a good look round that website, and had a play on a few bits of scrap. The effort it would take to get a 'proper' pattern applied to each model means I probably wont bother. These guys are taking upwards of 3 hours each already haha. What I might do is save it for vehicle camo netting, where it will be easy enough to do with big brushes and splogding.
@Tartarus - Thanks. I've gone in and done the arms and the gun (just need to finish off the metal) and feel reasonably happy with him.
@Brother SRM - Thanks man. That is close enough to what I ran with this time. A black/rhinox 50/50 mix, then Rhinox, wash and doombull highlight> Glad to know I'm on the right track for these things.
Now that I've got a schema reasonably worked out, I'm going to bash out a fire team, go with basing and arms and everything.
Thanks for the help guys.
