Hello everyone. I've decided I want to start playing Infinity after looking at multiple miniature war games. I had considered 40k, however I prefer skirmish style games. As well as the fact that I absolutely adore Infinity models. I just have a few questions that I would appreciate being answered.
So, I'm completely unsure where to start. Apparently there is this new N3 thing (is this a new rule set?).
I've had a look at the models on Corvus Belli and I'm convinced I want to begin with Aleph or Nomads, purely based on aesthetics and appearance.
Essentially what I'm asking is, where do I start? And what is N3?
Thanks for your time everyone and please excuse my lack of knowledge, as I'm fairly new to miniature war games.

N3 is the quickest way to type out "Infinity 3rd Edition" or as it sometimes gets called, "Infinity Number 3".
If you want to begin with Nomads, you will want the starter set for them(this item):
That box will get you the following army:
Nomads
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
 6
ALGUACIL Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
ALGUACIL Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
ALGUACIL Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
GRENZER MULTI Sniper Rifle / Pistol, Breaker Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 32)
MOBILE BRIGADA Lieutenant MULTI Rifle + Light Flamethrower / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 39)
SPEKTR Combi Rifle, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 31)
1.5 SWC | 132 Points
Open in Infinity Army
If anything from Bakunin tickles your fancy, be aware that they are in line for a overhaul of their range starting this year.

Find someone who knows how to play and ask for a couple of learning games. The rules are hard to parse unless you've seen them in action.
N3 is the third edition of the rules and is about a year and a half old. The rulebooks are available as pdfs from Corvus Belli's website ( https://www.infinitythegame.com/archive.php ), there's an army builder app on that page as well.
On buying models grab a starter box you like the look of. The one Kanluwen posted is one of three available to Nomads; the Corregidor starter pack is newer but the Bakunin one is one of the oldest and is in line for resculpting. Aleph has two, the core faction and the Steel Phalanx.
(Brief explanation: A faction is composed of up to three sectorials (sub-lists), if you play the faction as a whole (Nomads, for instance) you have access to all the models each sectorial has, but fewer of each. If you play a sectorial you are allowed more duplicates of the sectorial's models and you're allowed to use the fireteam rules, but you're not allowed to use models outside the sectorial. Start with the whole faction, use sectorials once you have your feet under you.)
I would also suggest being very careful before trying to paint Infinity models. There's a lot more subtle detail that can be easily messed up with thick paint than most models; go find someone who's better at explaining painting than I am for this one.

Not entirely sure what the SWC and the point values mean just yet, but thank you regardless. I'll be sure to pick up a starter set. I had also considered picking up that Operation: Firestorm starter pack. I'm still undecided.

Thanks for the reply. There are a few people that I've got interested so far, so hopefully they jump in. (They all play 40k).
I thought you needed to buy the actual rule book. Is there any difference between the online .PDF and the physical copy?
Also, I'm considering hiring Den of Imagination to paint my models. As much as I'd like to paint, I have no experience in it and I want the models looking amazing. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh. Also, are there many other women that play Infinity?
It's purely curiosity, as I don't care whether I play with guys or other girls.
This kind of hobby obviously has less women in it, but was wondering how it compared to 40k.
Thanks again.

As far as I know, there is no difference between an actual physical copy of the rulebook and the PDF file. I myself downloaded the PDF and it's pretty comprehensive.
To answer your second question, the amount of people that play and information regarding that population is completely dependent on your local area. Where I live, there's about a 3:1 ratio of guys to gals that play miniature wargames.
Hope this helps!
EDIT: @Quiet, just noticed: your flag says you live in Australia, whereabouts do you live? I live in west Melbourne, if you live anywhere near there we could go for a game or two.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
Nice. Will just download the .PDF then. I might get the book one day.
Cool. Was just curious really.
Ah, what a shame, I live in Central Sydney. I should be able to find a group. I've posted on some group pages on FaceBook asking if there are any groups around just then.

The printed books contain the fluff and the rules (separated into 2 books, a rulebook and a 'core' or 'guide' book), the PDFs contain just the rules books. That's the only difference. There's a few big groups around Sydney. The one closest to me is Penrith, though we're intending to build one up in Campbelltown. My biggest suggestion would be to join the Infinity Australia facebook group. Regarding SWC and points, they are two of the three ways you are limited on what you may bring. First and foremost is points. This dictates the size of the game. Generally, 300pts is the standard. Secondly there is SWC, or Support Weapon Cost. This is a secondary cost to limit how many special weapons you can take, so you don't just have a whole force of heavy machine gunners. You get 1SWC for every 50pts of the total game size, for 6SWC in a standard 300pt game. Every profile will list both point values, though most have 0 for SWC. This only kicks in for special weapons, some equipment like hacking devices, and occaionally for lieutenant options. Third is AVA, or Availability. Nearly all units are limited by AVA. If a unit has AVA 3, that means you can only take a total of 3 models of whatever profiles you like. A few, usually line infantry, have AVA T, or Total, which means you can obviously have as many as you want.

Thanks for the explanation Loki. Makes it much clearer.
Glad to see the game has some restrictions on what you can take. I've seen some 40k games my friends play where there is spammed squads everywhere.

There's at least one girl who plays with the group at Good Games Town Hall (clarence street). She goes by counting_kittens on the official forums - and the group have their own warcor (demo guy) called Alastair ("Dulydude") also. They have a group page on facebook (how most of the games and meetings get organised) - S.I.T.H. wargamers (Sydney Infinity Town Hall). Their game night is thursday. https://www.facebook.com/groups/SydneyInfinity/?ref=bookmarks

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I would say buy one of the starter boxes like Ice Storm or Red Veil and either find a local gaming group that has interest in Infinity or find a friend ( maybe that wants to split the price of a box) and play.
I wouldn't worry too much about learning all the rules at the beginning it's a really complex game and it needs to be approached like that or it'll drive you crazy
I think in the end it's worth it, take it slow learn how to move the models, activate models, shooting, face-to-face rolls and progress from there you can also look on YouTube for a lot of stuff that'll teach you about the game that I give you a really good idea of how it's played.
For the big first purchase figure out which faction you like the most from the 2 main boxes and buy that box.
