Hey mates. As it stands, I recently sold all of the extra stuff that I had in order to get my Deathwatch Army started. Currently, I have the following/ordered recently:

* 1x Master
* 2x Captains (1x PA, 1x Terminator Armor)
* 30x Deathwatch Veterans
* 3x Drop Pods
* 1x Venerable Dreadnought
* 1xx Corvus Blackstar

Game plan for me is to first collect enough Deathwatch to field them in the Drop Pods. However I am planning/debating on putting a squad in the Corvus Blackstar as well, and I am currently debating on is what would be the best way to loadout my Deathwatch Veterans in this case. Since the Corvus Blackstar is an Assault Vehicle, I have seriously considered Shotguns, but I am not sure if it would be worth it. But I do plan to have at least 2x Frag Cannons/Infernus Heavy Bolters, as since both are Assault Weapons the can provide close range fire support.

With that being said, I am looking for feedback from other Deathwatch players and other people who have either played against them or have experience with them on good loadouts for the Vets Squads. Particularly when they are mounted in a Corvus Blackstar. Still going through the Codex and have some ideas but extra help is always good and I do appreciate all the help mates.

Shotguns over what? Bolters? Unless GW says otherwise in FAQ you can have bolter AND shotgun and indeed would be stupid not to have both since it's free.

It's got nothing with being stupid mate. I am considering Shotguns over the Bolters because the Shotguns are Assault Weapons and combined with Power Swords would allow me to be able to shoot and assault the same turn. Could go with the Stalker Bolters but not sure if that would be a good option as I am still waiting on the Codex.

I would keep the bolters, if you're assaulting you don't really want to increase the charge distance. Don't forget you already paid for special ammo.

You can get bolter AND shotgun for free. Use special ammo when not assaulting, shotguns when are. It's not one or other but free option to have both.

So yeah it would be stupid to take just one when one can have both. For free.

If your strategy depends on exploiting an obvious oversight in the rules, you are why this game gets so much bad press.

Why is it an obvious oversight?

As written, they are 100% playing it correctly.

If you feel this is an error, then by all means, send GW an email every day to gamefaqs@gwplc.com and ask them to clarify.

Furthermore, a person that considers his own opinion as gospel is why neckbeards that haunt game stores get so much bad press.

Connecticut

"Obvious oversight"

Wargear explains how you can literally achieve this result, by swapping CCW for a Bolter, and your original Bolter for a Shotgun.

If you think a 3+ Single wound veteran being able to have a 24" shotgun and a 30" bolter is someone cheesing, I'd love to introduce you to thunderwolf stars so you can find something real to moan about.

Blood Angels, Custodes, Tzeentch, Alpha Legion, Astra Militarum, Deathwatch, Thousand Sons, Imperial Knights, Tau, Genestealer Cult.

I have a problem.

Being contrary for the sake of being contrary doesn't make you unique, it makes you annoying.

So how would you guys kit out a basic vet squad outside the formations ? I have all sorts of cool idea's for them, but kinda struggle with the cost of them since they still remain 3+ sv 1 wound marines.

I'm also scratching my head on that one, oldzoggy. I bought the parts I need to make a 5 man veteran squad with 4x Frag Cannons to hop out of a drop pod.

However, how durable is that unit? I don't really know!

I do kinda know how durable such a squad would be. I used to run drop pod combi melta vets as a reinforcement to my inquisitors. I stopped using them because I was no longer willing to pay such a high point cost for a suicide squad

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My best guess would be to use them as heavy bolter devistators or just as anti cover tacticals. But there has to be a better way to use them especially considering those nasty close combat weapons and the blackshield rules

That's basically what I am asking, however in this case I am trying to debate the best option for a Squad of them mounted in a Corvus Blackstar. I could go Assault Heavy with them, but I would like the ability to provide Close Range Fire Support if necessary as there will be units that I would not want to get stuck in CC with. Hence why I was considering the Shotguns as that way I could still fire and assault with them as they are Assault Weapons. Kind of sucks that we can't take Vanguard Vets without Jump Packs, as that would make this decision a bit easier as I do love the idea of Squads of Deathwatch Vets Drop Poding in with 4x Frag Cannons or Infernus Bolters and wreaking havoc.

I'm actually pretty pumped about using loads of basic, non-upgraded Veterans to DS with. They're costed well without upgrades and have special ammunition already...

Of course, as a Tyranid player, anything like this is a novelty. AP3 ranged troops? Uh, yeah!

regarding the black star, if you could squeeze a squad of bikes onto your list, I'd carry them in the blackstar. at the very least you might catch someone off guard with it

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
