Subject: Return to the Underhive - building a Necromunda gang(s)

Brief backstory - I played Necromunda back in the 90s with an Orlock gang. I loved the campaign, and the original Necromunda models still are some of my favourites. I lost the original gang and about 10 years ago I picked up a few more off ebay to try and get back into it, but had no one to play with. I painted a couple, but it got no further.
Now, I've rediscovered my old models, and so with a combination of stripping some, and an ebay bargain of every original Orlock model made, I've made another start.
So far, one test model done (though awaiting a base).
As I had a few duplicates kicking around from previously, I didn't need to strip everything yet, so thought it would be interesting to compare 3 generations of miniature. On the left one of my original gang from the 90s. In the middle a new scheme from 2006ish. On the right the new test piece. A pretty similar scheme to the one from a decade ago, but I've tried to put a few new techniques into play here.
I've also picked up a lightbox for cheap off ebay, so once I have some completed (and based) models I'm hoping to get some proper pics taken, not just phone snaps.

That denim looks really good. A hard one to get right!
Are you doing any terrain as well? I'm always on the lookout for good necromunda terrain to use as inspiration for my own stuff!

Yay, Necromunda! Love the new Juve. It's always good to compare and contrast your old stuff with your new stuff; I've been doing it a lot recently. I've come a long way with a lot of missteps in between!

Ok, I've been rubbish at posting to this, but I have been painting. Just not taking many pics.
The juve from the first post is done and based too with a Scrapyard base from Secret Weapon. Been experimenting with pigments on them, which have a bit of a learning curve.
I've also completed one more juve, two gangers and the leader with a sweet pimped out white meltagun.
Here's the ganger with a shotty
And a work in progress. Just blocked out some of the base colours so far

Yes, I do have some scenery. I bought a job lot of laser-cut MDF terrain that I'm currently trying to figure out what to do with. It'll be a while til I work on it properly, but I want to embellish it with pipes and other details, and then maybe paint it in a way inspired by the original card-stock terrain (which I no longer have in useable condition sadly).

I really like the way they've turned out. Is that autogunner going to be dark skinned, or have you got a funky multi-layer recipe for skin?

Thanks. Yes he is. I'm trying to have a fair amount of variety in the gang, so there's diversity in skin tone, and hair colour. I figured that they're not an organised military so the clothing would vary too, so while the basic colours are the same, and the red bandannas have the same recipe, the jeans are different blue tones, the boots are a mix of black and brown etc.
I used this excellent article http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1310-ethnic-skintones as the basis for quite a few of the recipes.

Not had time to progress the new ganger yet, but got a couple of the other finished guys photographed.
Juve number 2 with laspistol:
Ganger 2 with autogun and stubgun
What this gang doesn't have yet is a name, and I'm all out of ideas for that so far.

Always loved the game and your figures look like they deserve to win their battles with their rivals.
Cannot wait to see some more of your newer paint jobs as your three model line-up shows the changes and improvements.
No idea for a name, but red headbands need to be in it.

The last of my completed models photographed. Need to get back on the painting wagon, but work keeps getting in the way.
In any case, here's my leader, un-named like his buddies for now.
It's a shame the new rules sets don't allow him to be armed with his meltagun (I also have the other Leader model with boltgun, and that's not allowed either). So it's going to be a proxy flamer for now til I can get him a meltagun in the marketplace.

@OrlockJuve - I need to paint some denim soon and I really like the look of yours. How have you painted them?
I'm guessing a blue (Ultramarine blue) base coat, a wash, then some light blue (Teclis) drybrushing? Is that about right, or is there something more detailed to get it looking denimy?
(I'm hoping this isn't thread necromancy!)

Apologies for the woeful lack of keeping this updated. Life has gotten in the way and getting the gear out to take photos is a pain.
I have, however, finished the Orlock gang. Or at least, enough models to make a start with.
Here's the whole bunch.
And some solo pics of the newer members:
I've also started on a Ratskin Renegades gang. More to come on that one soon. Automatically Appended Next Post: Whittlesey40k wrote:@OrlockJuve - I need to paint some denim soon and I really like the look of yours. How have you painted them?

I'm guessing this is too late, but in case it helps here's what I do for the denim, it's pretty simple really, but I try and vary it a bit.
Basically it's a dark blue, followed by a black wash, followed by gradual highlights of the dark blue with increasing amounts of off-white mixed in. I don't drybrush it but try and highlight in thin, slightly random lines to give the appearance of the texture.
In order to give some variation in the gang I don't use the same starting blue on every model. I've used the following blues:
Ultramarine Blue by Vallejo Game Colour which is a pretty standard bright blue denim
UK Prussian Blue by Vallejo Model Colour which has a slightly green tint to it.
Kantor Blue by Citadel which gives a darker more subdued denim colour.
By using the same black wash and same highlight colour (ivory by Vallejo Model Colour) it makes them work as a group and keeps the differences fairly subtle. Automatically Appended Next Post: And here's a preview of the start of my Ratskin gang. These are all about the neutrals. I've tried to keep a pretty limited palette but vary it around the gang again. So one has brown boots and olive trousers, another with black boots, brown trousers. All the ratskin pelts are different colours

Nice looking Ratskins. I have fond memories of Necromunda. One friend played Orlock while another played Ratskins, so it is a treat seeing your gangs.

I like the overall color scheme - reminds me of the 80s. : ) I like the way you do highlights too. Damn, the guns look big though. Guess that is the problem with running any gang but Goliath.
