Hello all!

I want to make a Blood Angels successor chapter led by the Lord Executioner model, and with a plethora of jump packs and violence.

But! I don't want to paint them red. I already have a red-uniformed Imperial army (my Sisters of Battle).

So I need some ideas for colour schemes... I've had a little think and come up with some options:

Orange, with black, white and yellow accents. Something to do with tigers?

Emerald green, with silver teardrops - the Emperor's Tears, or the Woebringers?

Maroon/purple with bone and silver - Wrathbearers?

I dunno. Ideas and criticism welcomed!

In my experience if you start with a name you like the color scheme will follow.

Will you be using the BA specific bitz? If so red blood drops on green could look cool.

Maybe have them be something like the "Sanguinary Sorrower" who are a successor chapter that continue to mourn the loss of Sanguinius and show their mourning through the bloodshed of their enemies. Could make their droplet a mix of blood and tear color. Maybe color them a whitish grey as they are in mourning colors (Wikipedia says red is frowned upon for mourning) and it represents the loss of blood (Sanguinius) leaving them pale.

So a couple things regarding Blood Angels successors:

* There are a fair few successor chapters (complete with color schemes) out there. Many of them are red. Some are not. Have you looked at those yet? The Angels Encarmine have lots of white armor (with red highlights) on their more experienced units, so an elite force of those guys could look very white.

* Death Company are painted mostly black and can be equipped with jump packs. How would you feel about a Death Company force?

* Blood Angel successors all suffer from the red thirst/black rage. As a result, they tend to be somewhat fixated on their iconic symbolism (angel wings, blood, etc.) So while an army of "Astral Tigers" or whatever sounds awesome and would make for a really cool paint scheme, you would probably want to figure out how their tiger aesthetic ties into their cultural background as BA successors. Or just use the BA rules and give the chapter fluff totally unrelated to the BA. That's fine too!

EDIT: My own BA successors, the Storm Angels, go for a red-and-metallics color scheme, hinting at their close ties to certain branches of the Mechanicus. They use a combination of suspended animation (in their coffins of course) and modified auto-sanguinary nanites to combat the curse of their lineage.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Some good ideas above.

All I can suggest is to find some idea and run with it. Be it a colour or a character or even just a small bit of fluff.

In my own case my now BA were once a successor called The Daywalkers led by Lord Blade who had cured the curse and could walk in the emperors sunlight. Sounds daft now but back then when the movies were out it was great.
They were cream armoured with black trim and used all the BA icons/symbols and all it took was a psyker handing out some whoop ass in a game and a whole new paint job

Hope this helps somehow

Thanks very much for all the replies so far!

I'm thinking an army of jump troopers with a small Death Company unit (perhaps, amusingly, in red armour).

I like Vankraken's idea of the Sanguinary Sorrowers, perhaps something like the Mourners of the Dead maybe, or the Mournful... hm.

I'm definitely going to be using the Blood Angels specific parts; I really like the renaissance neo-classical feel of the sculpted abs and the wings everywhere.

Angels of Woe, perhaps? Hm. I'll have a faff around with that, see what I can come up with. Keep the ideas comin' please!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The Adeptus Astartes Angels of Woe - 15th Founding; Geneseed from the Blood Angels Chapter.

Colours - Purple and turquoise, quartered.

Markings - Company colours shown on shoulder pad trim. Specialisation denoted by helmet colour (Tactical - Red, Assault - Yellow, Devastator - Blue, Veteran - White, Honour Guard - Gold).

Right shoulder pad carries squad number, left pad carries chapter emblem (a silver tear drop, winged). The chest eagle is always gold.

Weapons are black or gunmetal.

The Angels of Woe specialise in shock assaults carried out by drop pod, teleport assault, or Thunderhawk insertion, and have few heavy vehicles as a result (although Rhinos, Razorbacks, Whirlwinds and Predators are held by the Chapter Armoury). Terminator armour is rare, and as a result restricted exclusively to the Chapter Master's Honour Guard, an elite group of Marines drawn from the First Company. Although officially a 'Codex' Chapter, the Angels of Woe are afflicted with the same genetic curse as all other Blood Angel successors, and, accordingly, have been known to field what they refer to as the Mourning Company, red-armoured Marines whose main role is to die with honour and glory. As a result, no Angels of Woe Company is at full strength, and despite somewhat aggressive and unorthodox recruitment practices, losses have run at a higher rate than replacements for some decades now.

Based in the Eastern Fringe of the Ultima Segmentum, the Angels of Woe have fought alongside such luminary Chapters as the vaunted Ultramarines, the dour and stern Righteous Fists, and the zealous Black Templars, not to mention the many and varied forces of the Imperial Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus. Whilst the Chapter does have a fortress-monastery on the tribal and feudal world of Praxis-II, the majority of the Chapter is fleet-based, ranging far and wide, answering calls for aid and petitions for assistance as often as possible, seeing their role as defenders of Humanity and the Imperium as paramount. It is the result of one such petition that has seen the 8th (Assault Reserve) Company's Strike Cruiser Sorrow of Sanguinius with its attendant escorts join the Amalthean Crusade against the Tau.

Initial thoughts on an army list:

Lord Executioner (Captain)

Chaplain with Death Company

10 Assault Marines
10 Assault Marines
5 Vanguard Veterans (Command Squad maybe?)

Landspeeder with MM
Landspeeder with MM

Baal Predator because why not

It's a little too busy for my taste. They look like harlequins in power armour . Jokes aside, I would get rid of the yellow helmet or the quarter sceme.

Speaking from experience (and this goes for all paint schemes), go with something you enjoy painting and a scheme that you can't paint fairly well and fairly efficiently.

I went with predominately black armour and have regretted it pretty much ever since. I would have been much better off going all red with my BA successors.

Also, your proposed list has no troop choices in it. Assault squads were moved to FA in this codex sadly.

Yeh, that's kind of why I want the vibrant colours - it's going to be really striking once it's all done up! Kind of like colour reversed Howling Griffons (sort of). As far as the list goes, well, I'm using the WD list for 4th Edition, but I'm sure it'll work as an Unbound list for the current edition, right?

Be mindful of your choice of colours and paint scheme my friend and always remember that you'll be the one painting it.

A lot has changed since that list. I would look at getting a newer one.

Oh yes, I'll be painting them. The colours may change, but they'll be quartered and with the helmet colours staying the same. As for the list, well, it certainly has changed, but I still mostly play 4th Edition. I may crack and use the 5th Edition BAngels 'dex, but I quite like the WD one.

Or I could go totally off the wall and plunge back into 3rd...
