I've played competitive 40k for years now and am really enjoying what the generals handbook did for the game and would like to see a similar tournament style as 40k . In my local meta i haven't seen much in the way of RTT's for Aos..are people seeing more tournament style events / games in their local meta?

We are kicking off a championship ladder at 1000 pts which will run a year, complete with championship belt and a ranking system.

However no, there are no tournaments sprouting up for it because most of our serious tournament players don't consider AOS serious business and stick with the games that they do like xwing or warmachine.

The FLGS is having a quasi-tournament event Sept 10, with 3x 2000 point games using the missions from the book. The store isn't calling it a tournament (guessing because of negative competitive associations), but is awarding First Place (top obj score), Best General (obj score + paint score), and Best Hobbyist (paint score), which certainly sounds like a Warhams tournament

I've got plans so won't be attending, but currently sat at 10 attendees, with high expectations of one of the two Destro armies taking first, as they're nigh unbeatable in our meta.

I know a number of the AOS crew are headed to NOVA this weekend for the 1500 point tournament, and then Crossroads GT in a few weeks for their 2240 two-dayer. Which I'll be playing KOW at instead

My flgs is hosting a 2000 pts tourney in a month. I am curious to see how it goes because of how easily min-maxxed the GHB is (and this tournament is pretty light on the comp).

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I'm going to this tournament with my wife, and yeah... there will predictably be a few Beastclaws. I've gone out of my way to tailor against them, which should be a good test of early-days meta. Arguably, if I win, its a testament to meta working correctly, with competitive lists being born, countered, and then counters made to counters, etc.

From what i've seen so far, though, AoS holds up pretty well competitively. When played to the objectives, etc... the disparity between a great A++ list, and a fluffier B- list isn't so great as to make games unfun to play out. Its a world different from my bringing the best Tyranid list I could to an ITC event, and getting shot off the table in two turns with 40k. :-p

AOS will never be a hardcore competitive game I don't believe not without some serious ITC style changes to make the tourney players happy. I don't think its meant to be but tournaments will be fun I plan on playing at adepticon this year in hopefully a doubles and singles AOS event. But as it stands now without any sort of comp beyond the rules in the GHB I see people having fun. I am sure to see the ITC get a hold of this game and do what they do as far as changes but for now ill keep playing as its written and have fun with it.

RTT? Rankings something tournament?

I've played several AoS tournaments before the GHB and many upcoming from the scene in US that used to be fantasy. Under player made comp it did fine. Interested to see how GHB tourneys go. I expect many differences between them. Like, the next two I have are rolling traits and artifacts instead of picking. Otherwise not much expect the tone of the event--hobby or hardcore. I prefer hobbyist.

A huge diff though for GHB will affect the faction armies with few unit choices. Like Fyreslayers we have 3 units and 9 hero choices but only have 6 leaders allowed. That's cool, we know that going in and if we wanted a hardcore list we'd just take a GA army. But looking forward to trying it out in a larger tournament outside a store.

ITC already has an AOS system for LVO and it is an abomination. It is not written with any understanding of the rules of the game, and full of badly written wording with poorly thought out rules, and is in my opinion one of the worst comp systems for the game. The sideboard mechanic is horrible with the generals handbook scenarios as it takes all the skill out of list building and doesn't make you build an all comers list. It favors skewed lists heavily. I do not like ITC in general and I think they accentuate the worst parts of the game. Just my thoughts but the game works just fine for events with just the ghb. It is probably one of the best balanced systems gw have ever made, especially if you use the scenarios. We have several planned in SoCal and a huge scene now.

The UK tourney scene is massive (I've only been to one so far, myself as I am just getting into it). It works great as a fully competitive tournament game. 2017 is going to be a massive year with the GT coming back!

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I don't know that I'll ever really believe that, given the vagaries of the Four Pages, the lack of internal consistency in the factions, and that the game wasn't designed for it (it = full competition). In 1-2 years when 10+ more Battletomes for subfactions are on the market? Yea, could be a thing, as it'll be more clear that limiting for theme is rewarded, as well as unlocking far more battleline units, providing more than two armies with spell lists () and creating a magic phase worth thinking about, etc.

That said, I look forward to playing in more events, and will likely do an AOS GT in 2017, unless I really get carried away with my proper KOW army I'm revving up for. Unfortunately I do think a touch of extra comp is needed to stop the most extreme abuse, as simple as capping Thundertusks or Mournghouls at two per army

Final Aside From A Gnarled Veteran: For those of you for never played an 8E WHFB tournament, they were virtually always comped, as many of us understood from the first week of the edition that RAW it was pretty messed up as a tournament game, between accidentally-on-purpose sniper spells, instagib cannonballs, bs terrain rules, and (shocker!) pretty bad internal balance in the armybooks. So we comped it a handful of ways, and somehow enjoyed many years of a fully competitive tournament game ... or so the fully competitive tournament gamers told me, as I battled my way to 50% and drank a bunch

AoS just needs a fleshed out and significant sportsmanship/comp aspect to tournament rankings and it will work fine.

I'm seeing this in the US at least for events. Holy Wars announcement went up and seeing sports points is cool as that event is a perfect match for AoS with the 15 race-themed tables (yes, works for AoS, too, even better actually).
