I actually don't mind the bases as they are. I guess bases these days are so detailed that they detract from the models sometimes. Also it is hard to paint a base in a style that doesn't clash with the different types of board. He has clearly put paint on them, so I wouldn't say they aren't painted.

Appreciate the comments guys, John Blanches art and depictions of the 40k Universe is actually my main inspiration ;]

Defo agree when it comes to bases, I personally like to go for a sort of brown gravel with a bit of a highlight so it doesn't distract from the model and could pass for multiple environments.
