Greetings, Hobbyists and Crafters!

Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Riveters Hobby Challenge, Round 41. This round's theme is The Vault (described below) and the round ends on April 30, 2023. Our goal is to elevate and celebrate the aspects of the hobby beyond painting miniatures-- the scratch-building, theme-evoking, and detail-obsessing construction efforts that help immerse our models in a believable and richly textured world. Come one, come all!

As the unofficial host of this round, appointed by no one at all, I have selected the theme from as the second place finish from the last theme poll that MacPhail put up. The theme for Round 41 is The Vault.

THE VAULT: Your build should store something of value; it could be a treasure room, a computer core, a library or gallery, a sacred reliquary, a tomb, a hangar or garage, an armory, a high-security control system, a doomsday device... the place was built to display or protect something of value.
Alternatively, you could select a project that has been stored in your own personal vault of shame, something you’ve been meaning to finish that is taking up your shelf or storage space in your hobby area.
Any other tie in to the theme would be welcomed. If you are unsure if your idea fits, don’t hesitate to reach out. I would love for there to be many entries in this round of the competition. An extra entry that stretches the theme a bit would be preferable to an extra observer on the sidelines. Observers, however, are more than welcome.

The idea behind this challenge is terrain building. We encourage creative and original works with a particular emphasis on detail. The League of Extraordinary Riveters highly encourages attention to subtle details that add a depth of life to your project. Details including, but not limited to, rivets.
You can make as small or as large a model as you want. Bear in mind the deadline, don't bite off more than you can chew, but don’t be afraid to bite and chew boldly.

Please consider building and painting playable terrain pieces, decorative terrain, display plinths and dioramas, table tiles or modular components, game aids, restoration or conversion projects... if it isn't a wargaming figure, it probably qualifies. Feel free to stretch the limits of the theme as much as you can, just make it work!

Please complete the build and paint phases in the course of the challenge period. Your project must be completed by the deadline. And when I say "must", I mean "about". There is a fair amount of leeway given in these contests but assume there will be no extensions and we'll cross any problems when they arise. Please post up to six (6) high-quality photos in this thread before the deadline expires in your local time zone. A member of the League will compile and post the finished work for public review. Please post materials and progress photos here as well, ask and answer questions, offer insights and advice, and celebrate the work as much as the finished products.

Plenty of WIP photos and posts will keep the community engaged, so work steadily and post often. Please start with a photo of your core components and materials and/or a description of your setting, your scene, or the book that has inspired you. Then the community will rally and cheer each other on. Regular updates will keep the contest visible, WIP pics will generate ideas and opinions, and we can all push our abilities forward and have some fun. Ask questions, make respectful comments and suggestions, lament setbacks, and celebrate victories. The more posts, the more awareness of the competition we generate.

As strange as it sounds, it will benefit your entry to put as much effort into taking photos of your finished model as you have building it; try to finish in time to make your best effort and ask for support if needed. Poorly lit, out-of-focus, blurred, and low resolution photos can harm your chances in any competition. If you want to add some figures for scale purposes or to display your new piece in situ, do so, as long as it is clear that your entry alone will be judged.

If you are unsure of anything, just ask.

Thanks for starting this DJ. I've been missing the LoER terrain contests. Even though I have very little time with a newborn son, I'll through my hat in the ring. I plan to make a treasure room for the D&D adventure "Blue Alley"

Thank you for applying Revivification Juice to this endeavor, DJ!
I'll try to extend my string of finished LOER projects to two in a row (for a grand total of three actually completed); it'll be a triple challenge for me to:

a) Get it finished in time
b) Think of an interesting idea
c) Carry out the execution with the limitations of a (still) ravaged living space

Looking forward to seeing all the other entries- I gain a ton of ideas and experience with every evolution of the LOER.

Rock on!

Well, congratulations on the newborn! Another miniature to add to the collection. I hope that you get a chance to do some hobby work, but at the same time, you can't get those years back. Enjoy!

Hey, three is even better than two! I also love seeing what the good crafters out there can do. Sharing ideas is part of the whole point.
I had to catch up on your blog to understand part c. That's rough. So sorry you're going through that.

Glad to have you aboard. Can't wait to see what you put together.

That sounds like a great idea.

My own entry might be more along the lines of coming from my personal vault of shame. I should be able to look around and put together some ideas soon.

I plan on joining in with some sort of bunker type thing. Working on some sketches of what to build.

This is perfect, I've got a project that fulfills both parameters:

The Astrologer's Tower, a storehouse of arcane knowledge and wizardly trinkets. Wanted something to add some more vertical access to my table. There's also a Wizard's Tower scenario for Mordheim, in which warbands loot the tower and curse each other as they fight over the treasure (magic curses, not swearing - probably both though).
I also already made the base and glued a couple plastic tubes to it with cardboard mockups 2 months ago. Haven't touched it since. It stares down at me from the top of my desk, judging me as I load up Rimworld again instead of working on it:

Looking forward to seeing everyones process and progress.

I'm working on a project that fits both as well, though a factory storage tank isn't all that exciting of a "vault".
I might find a way to jazz it up, but I did start measuring and cutting.

I am going to cheat and use my Rampage Eternal Cathedral core set build that is my submission for this month in the Monthly Painting Challenge (well if I can get it painted before the end of the month). Cathedrals have vaults...vaulted ceilings, vaults under the floor, and I am sure there is something else associated with vaults in Cathedrals.

The long painting war continues...

Starting the rubble and added some angled supports for the missing roof (as the kit does not have one).

@ Skinflint Games: Yeah I should, it's a REALLY good game though. I've found I can do both now.
@ DJJazzyJeff: Nice collection of tubes, a good starting point!
@ Captain Brown: Good progress. I especially like the wavy interlocking bases. I did something similar with some ruins a few years ago, but the bases were just straight-cut to fit with each other - yours looks much more natural.
@ Syro_: Thanks man, and congrats on the new family member! That's exciting (and exhausting I'm sure).

Since the roof is partially damaged and open to allow for players to manipulate models inside of the tower, I wanted it to look as realistic as possible - usually I just use cardboard cones for rounded roofs, with balsa glued to the underside to represent rafters. This time I made rounded frames of balsa rafters and laid the coffee stirrer decking over top:

Close up shots in the gallery. Sorry no WIPS, not used to taking photos regularly anymore. Still not quite done on the decking but enough to share. If anyone is interested in the construction process I'll detail it in the blog.

Keep going everyone!

Been getting work, here is a few pictures. Still have a bit to go. Hope to get the construction done this week and start painting next week.

Have the assembly finished and ready to paint. Unfortunately the last few days have seen a mix of rain and strong winds keeping me from rattle can priming the bunker. Heres hoping tomorrow will be better weather wise.

Mine is not completely made from scratch of course.

Painting started.

There are the three pieces together.

The two whose bases join.

Another angle.

One that shows the interior destruction.

Here was a case where the kit did not have an even number of column sides, so I filled with one with chicken wire to create the illusion of rebar in the core.

Have the piece painted. I am going to try oil washes on it for the next step. Haven't messed with oil washes before so hopefully it turns out ok.

@Captain Brown: Shaping up nicely, the rubble looks great.
@Peterhausenn: Looking good man, the red accents really make it pop.

Got the base of the tower bricked up, working on the top portion now. The decking on the roof is also finished.

Hoping to start painting by the end of the month.

How is everyone's terrain coming? We only have a few weeks before our scheduled competition end date. I, personally, am not sure if I'll make it. I'm essentially finished with construction, but have the long painting road ahead. The freehand graffiti is going to be the most time consuming part. I guess we'll see what happens. Is anyone else struggling? Is anyone finished? What's the progress update?

Here are a few pictures. I have the towers and walkways built, along with all the rest of the railings I had started. It should be almost enough to cover my whole set up. I glued on some greebles and then primed everything, but I shot it at a downward angle so you can clearly see where I completely missed under the overhang. I still am going to do rust and peeling paint effects, so it shouldn't matter too much.

Wow DJ, that looks great. The slotting for modularity is brilliant. I also really like the buttresses/support things at the top of the smokestack, gives it a really archaic vibe.

I'm behind but approaching finishing the construction. However I just got my eyes lasered so I'm out of commission for a few days. Hoping to start painting by next weekend.

Looking good DJ!
And wow Thumpingbear, take care with those eyes. When I got mine lasered a few years ago, it was really hard to look at screens for a long time. Here's hoping for a quick recovery

I've been so into other projects that I've been forgetting to work on my LoER competition piece. No need to hold up the competition for me, don't know if I'll get moving on it but I'll try.

I'm not going to be able to play this time around- I just can't dig out my tools and bits and bobs from the wreckage of the apartment just now. I'll have to leave my automated extraction facility standing for the moment as my last completed project. Hopefully I can repurpose the specialty LEDs for a future coimpetition- I'm really looking forward to trying them out!

Thumpingbear- a quick recovery, indeed! Many prayers for the utmost success and swift recovery.

@Syro_: I couldn't look at screens for a day, was good by the second. The recovery went very smoothly.
@Meer_Cat: Thanks for the prayers, it went great. Very sorry to hear about your apartment, that's awful. I hope you get everything sorted out without too much pain.

I forgot to take pics of everything before I started priming, but better late than never:

Excuse the black primer against the black backdrop, too lazy to do it properly. Gonna pull some marathon painting and get this done

I have everything finished. I am mostly satisfied, or at least satisfied enough to call it done. The oil wash attempt didn't work out as well as I had hoped. I don't know if I didn't mix it properly but it didn't flow into the grooves as well as I wanted. Furthermore the brown wash I used tinted the bunker much more than I planned. Also when I went to wipe off the excess it didn't remove near as much as thought it would. If nothing else this challenge was filled good learning experiences.

Well I have also run out of time, so this will have to be considered my entry.

Well life has gotten in the way of finishing my piece. I'll need an extension to tomorrow if everyone is willing.
