At least 25 people have been injured in an explosion in New York City, officials say.
Fire trucks and ambulances converged on the scene after what witnesses described as a "deafening" blast in the Chelsea district of Manhattan around 21:00 (01:00 GMT on Sunday).
FBI and Homeland Security officers are at the scene, a local councillor said.
The cause of the explosion is unclear. It comes just hours after a pipe bomb exploded in a New Jersey town.
That blast occurred shortly before thousands of runners were to participate in a charity race nearby. No injuries were reported.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/17/us/nj-explosive-trash-can/
n explosion that went off in a garbage can Saturday morning in a New Jersey beach town likely was timed to disrupt a Marine Corps charity run, authorities said.
Three pipe-bomb-type devices wired together were found near the boardwalk in Seaside Park. No injuries were reported and a four-block area was evacuated for most of the day, authorities said.
An initial examination showed the devices were rudimentary, with some type of timer, and only one of them detonated, two federal law enforcement officials told CNN.
Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County prosecutor's office, said he believes the blast was meant to affect the Seaside Semper Five race.
"If it was just a matter of minutes, in terms of difference, there would have been a good number of people running past that explosive device" because of its location along the race route, Della Fave said.
Regarding the New Jersey bomb.

I missed that. So two blasts in the North East in less than 24 hours?

This had to be a concerted effort. The New Jersey one was clearly an attempt to recreate the Boston Marathon. The bomb went off minutes before runners would have been there.
Officials say runners were expected to be pass by the area around the time the blast occurred but the start of the race had been delayed after an unattended backpack was found.
Sheer luck there weren't casualties from that one.

There were reports of a blast in Charlottesville, Virginia. But that turned out to be a transformer failing and going boom.

An explosion in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood Saturday night that injured at least 29 people appears to have been "an intentional act," Mayor Bill de Blasio said, and a possible second device was removed several blocks away.
The mayor said that although investigators believe it was intentional, there appeared to be no link to terrorism.
The cause of explosion has not been determined, said New York City police commissioner James O'Neill.
There is no credible threat to the safety of New Yorkers, the officials added.

Dubious on a connection between the two. I mean, not saying clearly 2 seperate events, but it seems like it would have made more sense to use similar devices, and just put them further away in the same city. I've been to Seaside and it's not particularly close to Chelsea, maybe 2 hours of driving? Why not just use the same kind of devices and put them a few blocks away. If this was a concerted terror attack, distributing them like that doesn't make sense.
I'm not saying it's not terrorism, I mean when you rig up a pressure cooker bomb that's pretty much on the nose, but not sure they are connected.

I doubt it. More likely than not, it was a lone nutter. The question is whether or not it was ideologically motivated, or someone who just wanted to do damage. And we have our fair share of nutters up here.

In addition to the one that exploded and the other one the police detonated, there were as many as five more: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/sep/19/new-york-bombing-both-devices-used-pressure-cooker-and-phone-reports Five suspected explosive devices have been found in a backpack near a train station in New Jersey as the security alert gripping America ratcheted up following the Manhattan bombing. One of the devices exploded when a bomb squad robot tried to disarm it near Elizabeth train station, the local mayor said. Christian Bollwage said the device exploded shortly after 12.30am on Monday. The FBI was leading the investigation and working to disarm the other four devices. However, if you could fit 5 in a backpack, then we're not talking about pressure cookers, are we? Unclear to me what these other 5 were.

Out of the city. I know you think of NY as some despotic dictatorship, but we don't go through boarder checks to drive into the city or anything.
If it was a rifle, he could have bought it at any sporting goods store, I don't think you even need a permit or anything (although that may have changed). Pistols I'm pretty sure you need a lisesne, but as long as he gets by the background check, I don't see any reason he couldn't. We have some weird-ass laws, but guns are still very much legal here.

Possession in the city would still be illegal though, correct? A quick glance would mean a permit would be required to have handgun or long gun. Granted, I'm not going to try to grind this axe that Frazz is. Dude wasn't supposed to make bombs... laws aren't gonna stop him with a firearm either.

Actually, NYC does issue handgun permits (for like $500 total, with all fingerprinting and stuff, which seems a little high, but that might be the point), but more likely than not, he just brought them in from out of NYC. We don't have boarder checks or anything, so all the NYC gun laws do is hit people with higher sentences and stuff like that.

Under the Sullivan Act of 1911, it's a bit more to it than that. The fact that the NYPD can refuse to issue a possession permit for any reason, usually ensures that only those with connections and/or money can get one. It's ten times worse if you want a carry permit, since it's "needs based".
Long guns in NYC require a permit, registration of every firearm purchased under said permit with the NYPD, and long gun purchases are limited to one per ninety day period.
