Does anyone know a good resource for general Aos tactics I've skimmed this forum and didn't see much? My FLGS just had their first tournament for AoS and since we had a good turnout (10 players) they're talking about doing another one in November and people are talking about coming in more to play. All good news. I lost all three of my games, but since it was my first time playing AoS I didn't expect more than that. We played: Take & Hold, Border War and Blood & Glory. Since all three of those battleplans involve holding objectives, in hindsight having some flying units would have helped me get around the board easier, but overall, I'm looking to see if anyone has any good advice for general army construction and battlefield tactics.

Tactics can vary depending on what army you use, so speaking of which what do you play? Army construction is pretty vital.

I play Chaos and right now I'm mainly looking to take advantage of my existing collection of miniatures, which is fairly large and encompasses Mortals, Beasts and Daemons across all gods. I also have a smaller collection of Skaven that I can add in.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I took the following:

Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount
10 Chaos Warriors
10 Marauders
5 Knights
5 Marauder Horsemen
10 Warhounds
20 Plaguebearers

Total: 960 pts

If I'd dropped the Plaguebearers to 10 I could have taken a unit of Screamers which would have helped immensely in game 3. First game I fought Nurgle Daemons, but he killed more than me, second and third games I fought Ogors and basically got tabled.

Competitive AoS is a matter of bringing the most high-powered list possible; there is such variation that a strong list played poorly will still dominate a weak list played well. Accordingly unless there is a sportsmanship score involved list-building is going to play a larger factor in determining winners and losers. This is to say the top players, middle players, and bottom players are roughly determined by the lists unless everyone is within a close margin of relative power. Once that is out of the way tactics come in, which as Zebio stated is very dependent on the army.

In my experience, nothing beats practice. This is because the most useful 'tactic' I find in any army I play is knowing the capabilities of my units on the field, what enemies they can handle, what enemies they can't, and so on. This lets me determine target priority, know which of my models need support and which are overkill, etc. I highly recommend playing whatever list you bring at least three times before the tournament.

Now as for specifics, can you give us a run-down of what models are available to you (and what you are willing to buy) ? That will help a great deal in figuring out good list options.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I have a lot of stuff in varying levels of completeness, but here's a rough estimate:

Various characters mounted and on foot
Lord on manticore (Egrimm van Horstmann)
50+ Chaos Warriors
40+ Marauders
25+ Chaos Knights
15+ Marauder Horsemen
2 Chaos Chariots
20+ Chaos Warhounds
25+ Gors
25+ Ungors
10+ Bestigors
5+ Daemon Princes
Bloodthirster
Lord of Change
Great Unclean One
Keeper of Secrets
20+ Plague Bearers
20 Bloodletters
20+ Daemonettes
9+ Nurglings
50+ Horrors
5ish Fiends of Slaanesh
10+ Flamers
6+ Screamers
5ish Flesh Hounds
6+ Minotaurs
6+ Chaos Ogres
6+ Dragon Ogres
1 Shaggoth
2+ Giants

As for Skaven I know I have at least:

A few characters
Handfull of clan rats
6+Rat Ogres
18ish giant rats
2 Warpfire teams
2 Ratling guns
10 Plague monks

It is so great one can have a mix of miniatures and still have a full valid army.

The only weakness I can spot in your list is the low number of fast models. Taking them out greatly hinders your mobility, leaving you with knights to cover all bases.

Seeing your mounted marauders reminds me to put them on my wishlist. I view them mainly as crazy men with a deathwish, to be thrown in front of strong enemies.

With love from Denmark

Completely agree. I love that I can put models on the table together that I used to be able to field back in 5th edition but lost that ability in later editions. I also love that I have the ability to cobble together an army from the hodgepodge of Order models that I've collected over the years.

Now... I think the points system needs some work to smooth some things out, but I'm happy they at least started somewhere. Also, I like the fact that I was able to play in a tournament without ever playing the system previously and feel like I didn't have to keep looking things up.
