I know in the lore it insists on the right pad remaining exactly the same as its previous chapter.... I love the concept, but I'm not a huge fan of the look. Would it be super un-fluffy to have the right should pad keep the symbol, but in black and white or black and silver?

I say go for it.
I agree with you on the look.
I think silver on black (or ViceVersa) would look geat.

If you wanted a uniform look, the other option is to have the entire Kill-Team be 'blackshields' - not in a rules sense, but narratively.

it would be unfluffy if they were all from the same chapter.

To many unpainted models to count. |

That's also what I'm thinking of doing. Don't like the overabundance of colors in a SM units. Would like to see pics if anyone did it.

They wouldn't be. Just the colors would be a black pad with the chapter symbol in silver/white.
I'll go ahead and try this for the hell of it, see how it looks, and post it here.

Personally I like the point of contrast, but I'm the one who plays Swordwind for the rainbow elves so I may not be a reliable source. Black and white would look good, though.
That said the reason presented for keeping the one shoulder pad the original colour is to avoid offending the armour's machine spirit, so if your armour save rolls suddenly start getting worse that may be the culprit.
