I have seen a lot of posts recently from people asking how best to acquire armies. I had two new kids at my store ask how to get the best value when buying an Ork army. SO to help out the community at large here you go. By no means is this a comprehensive list of the best ways to acquire an army, if anyone has any other ideas feel free to add them

1: Dakkadakka: Probably the best value your going to get. On a regular basis you have people getting out of the hobby or trading armies or getting rid of extras they don't want/need. Usually you can find 30-60% off models without looking to hard. If you can't then just post that you want something and the sellers will message you!

2: EBAY: I bought probably 50-60 Boyz on EBAY for less then a dollar each. You usually get a nob in there as well and sometimes a special weapon. Great value. Other things you need tend to be well priced as well, usually not as good as Dakka, but sometimes you get a great deal.

3: CRAIGSLIST: Holy crap have I seen some deals on here. The only downside to Craigslist is that in my experience they are not really willing to ship, so you have to go and pick it up yourself. I specifically remember a person selling 3 Ork Flyers for $20 each, still in the box!!! If I could have driven the 3 hours to pick them up I would have.

4: Friends: If a friend is getting out of the hobby its always good to talk to them about their army. I had a friend who left the hobby and gave his entire 3,000pt SM army to a new BA Player for a couple hundred dollars.

5: SMART BUYING!: Couple of tricks here for the Morky ork players. If you can't do any of the above, or you really want new models in package but you still want more bang for your buck. Buy Lootas. Here is the trick, Buy a box of Lootas and a box of Regular boyz. Inside the kit for lootas is all the bits necessary to make 4 Lootas or 4 burna boyz and a Mek. Inside the Box of Boyz you have the bitz to make 8 regular boyz, 1 nob and 1 Rokkit boy and 1 Big Shoota boy.

Combine the bits to make 4 Lootas, 4 Burnas, 1 Mek, 1 Nob with PK, 1 Tankbusta boy and you still have 5 Extra boyz left over, so if you bought a 2nd Loota box you will end up with. 8 Lootas, 8 Burna Boyz, 1 Nob with PK 1 Tank Busta, 2 Mekz and a single boy. Total cost for this

2 boxes of Lootas = $50
Box of Boyz = 29
TOTAL = 79

If you went out and bought 4 sets of Lootas to make those same models you would have spent $100 and you wouldn't have the Nob or the Tank busta or the extra boy but you would have 2 extra meks.

6: KIT BASHING/PROXY: If you can find some cheap vehicles from literally ANY faction BUY THEM! All you need to do is add a couple extra orky bitz. Maybe throw on a red paint job and BOOM you have any number of vehicles. Looted Wagon, Trukk, Battle Wagon, Deff Dreadz, you name it and you can probably modify any factions vehicles to make one of these.

7: MEGANOBZ: At the moment, Meganobz are one of the better units in our codex but they are stupidly OVER PRICED! Terminators on the other hand are mediocre to garbage models and can be found IN BULK for cheap. All you need to turn a Terminator into a MA Nob is a Nob Head, and a PowerKlaw. Strap on a few extra barrels to the Storm Bolter and Poof! you just made a Meganob. Having just done a quick search on EBAY I found numerous auctions for BUY IT NOW Terminators for $15 (5 terminators) and a number of Bids for less then that, the average seem to sell for 15-20. So if you bought 2 of those and have some extra Klaws and Nob heads laying around you could end up with 10 Meganobz for less then the price of 3 Mega Nobz from GW.

8: Mek Gunz: Similar to Meganobz, decent unit atm but holy christ are they over priced. $46 for a single model? You need 5 to make a single unit? Fething stupid. However, a number of other game companies make field artillery at 25 and 28MM scale!!! and again, with just a few orky bitz added you have MEK GUNZ!. I Found a bunch of german artillery pieces that look similar to Mek Gunz on EBAY for less then $11 a model. Yeah you won't get gretchen with them, but really those are cheap anyway. So you could buy a full 5 gun battery from GW for $230 OR you could buy 3 Full 5 gun batteries of those WWII Gunz for $165 and still have plenty of money left over to buy some gretchen models and go out and have some beers with your buddies

Those are it for now, if anyone else has some suggestions please add them

1 Space Marine Terminator

I converted the Nobz and some of the boyz into MegaNobz with some card, and plastic tubing. There is also a Terminator in the box, you could convert.

The Marine Dreadnaught could be converted into an Ork one.

Tankbustas - Basically Orks Boyz with a Rokkit Launcha. Each boyz kit comes with a rokkit as well as each loota kit. Make the majority of them this way and maybe mix in a few holding those landmine looking things (clearly tankbusta bombz ). With a bit of creativity you can make anything look proper Orky for them. I have one throwing one of the burna missiles from the Ork flyer kit like a javelin.
Kommandos - Sneaky Slugga Boyz. Glue some basing material onto them, give them a bit of extra kit (ammo, grenades, etc), maybe if your feeling extra flash give them night vision googles (they do nothing for in game night vision btw) or a silencer for their slugga (so unorky )
Painboy - Take a Nob from the Nobz box, maybe give him some cybork parts from in the Nobz kit, add a cloth thing under his belt to make it look more like a dok's smock, paint the cloth parts white and add blood. One of the sluggas for the Nobz had a cylinder under it that you can paint to look like it is full of chemicals. Take a stikkbomb handle and cut it and sharpen to a point then glue to the end of the slugga to make a urty syringe.
Flash Gitz - Nobz with Snazzguns. Take a Nob box and clip out the kombi guns. Modify the gak out of it with more gun barrels, ammo bins, energy packs, fancy bayonets, scopes, etc. Add the ammo backpack full of bullets to make sure your Gitz have plenty of ammo.
Some of my Gitz
Spoiler:

Mek Guns - Grot box + household junk = Mek Gun. I made some lobbas out of plastic soda bottle caps for the wheels, sprue for the axle, little pvc pipe to make 3 barrels together, and some cardboard to make a band around the barrels. So far they are just sprayed grey but they look like WW2 style german rocket artillery. Wheels are a bit obvious looking but some cardboard to make a wheel band and some hub caps and they will look passable. Cost maybe a dollar in supplies + whatever a 20oz soda cost if you don't happen to have any caps in your recycling.
Stormboyz - Take some Ork boyz and put something rocket like on their back. Ive used the seeker missiles from a Skyray but you could very easily take some pvc pike to make a tube, make a nose cone from paper, cardboard, greenstuff, etc for the end. Plasticard for some fins (you can buy "For Sale" signs for dirt cheap and use them as cheap plasticard). If you really want to get fancy to distract from the low detail of the rokkit pak you can take some cotton balls or the stuffing for pillows and paint it as smoke. Glue it to the underside of the rokkit pak (or top if you really want to express the hazardous nature of these things) and you have an exhaust effect.

Many of these methods are detremental to your lfgs and likely place you play. Bargains are great, just keep them in mind.

Crescent City Fl..

I got loads of used Ork Boys from Ebay last year. There are a few good shops on there for used mini's. War Bikers being just about as pricey as you'd expect but Boys at cannon fodder prices.
I frequent on seller, Laserous games for models, Black Dagger games for bitz.
I was drooling over one collection being sold this last year but the first price was too high for me. Buying collections is a good way to get a tone of models.
I also like BitzBoys for discounted new in Box. not the lowest price but very reliable. they're south of me in FL, so the shipping is some times two days to my PO box.
I just did some shopping with discount games in OH but I'm not sure I like them. If you shop ever shop with them, call to see if what you want is in stock that day, things can get held up. They don't manage what they list as in stock very closely.
My flgs also has loads of "preowned" models.
I tend to shop online because it's almost 2 a two hour drive to get up there.

The rewards of tolerance are treachery and betrayal.

Remember kids, Games Workshop needs you more than you need them.

@Capt. Camping there are lots of alternatives though. Rokkit orks are really pricey on ebay (certain units are inordinately priced like trukks and bikes from any army, for reasons that I'm not aware of) but you can easily make rokkits out of the ink casings of pens+some plasticard, or pull them off of toys (got mine off of model airplanes, still have a lot of work to do but they're cheap) and equip your boys with them. That's the glory of orks, half of our codex is just our stock unit with some extra item. Burnas, stormboys, lootas, tankbustas, kommandos, etc.

40k drinking game: take a shot everytime a book references Skitarii using transports.

Rokkits became expensive because the Tankbustas is the best right now out of many other units in the codex
