Space wolves. Giant wolf cavalry are much cooler than sticking a Razorback turret on a Predator.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Well, from the "Start Collecting" boxes, I don't think the SW one is great value where as the BA one is quite good.

For the armies themselves, I prefer the Space Wolf background, but don't really like where they've taken the aesthetic and prefer red marines to baby blue marines.

So paint some Space Wolves red?

I wasn't a fan of the baby blue either so I painted my wolves using a grey armor similar to their 30k color scheme.

The wolves for sure then you can wolf their wolves before they wolf yours, last thing you want to be is wolfed.

They're both sweet, I'd say get the one who's fluff, and maybe playstyle you enjoy. most.

Blood angels got a lot of love with their latest book, and might be more versatile imo.

Space wolves are probably best at CC though.

Blood angels!

Just as badass but less frat boys with wolf fetishes in space lol. Then again, if you like that, I'm not judging. It's just not my thing.

And, as a bonus, BA have gotten some great deal boxes floating around besides the start collecting with the advent of angel's blade. But, that's if you want more than just a SC box.

I don't think red goes well with the furs. I've test painted some Space Wolves red and didn't like the look, where as I like the look of red blood angels.

You might need a different colored fur. I would imagine a black or super dark grey would look pretty fantastic against the red. Or a warm white - blood angels have a lot of cream, warm white, or even cold white details already.

Ignoring the army styles and fluff to concentrate on the painting/modeling...

Not sure what the Blood Angels kits are like but the SW ones are very detailed. That could be good or bad depending on your preference. On the one hand the details are amazing but it makes painting much more fiddly and time consuming.

However, people often complain about red being a hard colour to paint so that may be a factor too.

BA kits are similarly detailed, just in a less organic, full of fur way. There are lots of bits of muscle cuirass, blood vials, iconography, parchment, and stuff like that. And beyond the tac marines, a lot of the "BA specific" boxes are the normal SM sprues with a BA upgrade sprue thrown in. I have not used it on much yet, but it worked to convert the Deathwatch guys from Death Masque... with a little fiddling and sanding and scraping.

So, I would guess that they are about the same as far as that goes.

SW is superior when compared with BA. More powerful army, better models/units.

Sw are overdone, overrated, etc. If you want an army with different strategies, challenges, etc, play blood angels (given I don't own them or play them). You do get to run many elite formations of vanguard, sternguard, and terminators, all with +1 initiative on the charge. There is also the death company, which is neat. I'm not a fan or bright red, but the flesh tearer scheme is cool.

Wolves are a one trick pony. Thunder wolf cavalry and wulfen in deathstars, a flyer, and one or two dreadnoughts with ss. Evwrone does it and it isnt fun to play against. Once you know this, you can crush them with a dark angel lions blade (normal bs overwatch and mass grav and Las razorbacks).

The wolves were cool before twc and the new wulfen. Now they are a bit ridiculous and boring.

Truth. GW really did jump the shark when they stuck a space wolf on a space wolf accompanied by a bunch of space wolves.

That said, if SW are a one-trick pony, BA are a no-trick pony. Run dreads fast tanks or find a few of the formations that don't actually suck and slap em together.
